Chapter 2 - The Question No One Should Have Asked.

Claire did not understand Patricia's question at first.

Her own phone was in her hand, glowing with the active 911 call.

Robert understood immediately.

His eyes moved from Patricia to the bed.

"Patricia."

His voice was low and sharp.

Patricia ignored him.

She took another step.

"I asked where the phone is."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"What phone?"

Patricia hesitated.

It was only half a second.

But Claire saw it.

Robert saw it too.

"Mom, stop talking."

Claire had never called Patricia Mom before, and the word came out like an accusation rather than affection.

Lily owned a small emergency-only phone that Claire kept in the side pocket of her backpack.

It had no social media, no games, and only four saved numbers.

Claire had given it to her after Lily once got separated from her at a crowded fall festival.

Patricia had mocked the idea for months.

"Children don't need phones."

Yet now, with Lily unconscious behind Claire, Patricia wanted to know where it was.

The realization sharpened every sound in the room.

Sirens stopped outside.

Car doors slammed.

Someone downstairs shouted that police were at the house.

Robert set his champagne flute onto the dresser with exaggerated care.

"Claire, this has gotten out of hand."

"It got out of hand before I entered this room."

Patricia's arms unfolded.

"We can explain."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Explain what?"

Neither grandparent answered.

A heavy knock sounded downstairs.

Then another.

"Police."

Robert moved toward the hall.

Claire raised her voice.

"Do not leave."

He looked back at her with cold disbelief.

"You don't give orders in my house."

The 911 operator heard him.

"Ma'am, officers are entering the residence."

Claire answered without looking away from Robert.

"We're upstairs, last room on the left."

Patricia flinched.

It was small, but unmistakable.

Robert finally lost his calm.

"You gave them directions inside?"

"Yes."

"Claire."

"Yes."

Boots pounded up the staircase.

Two officers appeared in the hallway, followed by paramedics carrying equipment.

The lead officer immediately assessed the room.

Claire stepped aside only when the paramedics asked her to.

One of them knelt beside Lily.

The second began asking Claire basic questions.

"How old is she?"

"Six."

"Any known medical conditions?"

"No."

"Do you know what happened?"

Claire looked at Patricia.

"No."

Patricia spoke too quickly.

"She fell."

Every person in the room seemed to freeze.

Claire turned slowly.

"You said she was probably upstairs playing."

Patricia blinked.

Robert stepped in.

"She means we think Lily may have fallen."

The lead officer looked between them.

"Did either of you witness a fall?"

Robert's jaw tightened.

"No."

Patricia looked at the carpet.

"Not exactly."

Claire felt anger rising through the fear.

"Then how did you know?"

Patricia did not answer.

One paramedic quietly lifted Lily's stuffed rabbit from the bed to make space.

A small object dropped from beneath it and hit the hardwood floor.

Everyone looked down.

It was Lily's emergency phone.

The screen was cracked.

A single notification was still visible.

MISSED OUTGOING CALL: MOM.

Claire stopped breathing.

The timestamp was seventeen minutes earlier.

Patricia stared at the phone.

May you like

Robert closed his eyes.

And the lead officer reached for his radio.
