Chapter 12 - The Story Patricia Needed Everyone to Believe.

Patricia's version of events finally became simple.

That was how Claire knew it had been rewritten carefully.

According to Patricia's attorney, Lily had become upset after being told to put away her phone.

She had gone into the guest room.

She had suffered an accidental fall while alone.

Patricia and Robert had discovered her moments later and were preparing to get Claire when Claire entered first.

Every uncertain detail had disappeared.

Every contradiction had been sanded smooth.

There was only one problem.

The evidence refused to cooperate.

Ethan saw Robert with the phone before Claire found Lily.

Denise heard Lily asking for her mother.

The phone's back cover was discarded upstairs.

Security images placed both grandparents near the room.

Robert's device accessed camera settings after Lily's missed call.

Lily remembered being told not to call Claire.

Patricia's clean story required everyone else to be mistaken at exactly the same time.

Claire read the attorney's summary once, then put it down.

"They're going to keep saying accident."

Daniel nodded.

"Probably."

"Even if nobody believes them."

"They only need enough doubt."

Claire hated that sentence because it sounded true.

Detective Ruiz warned them not to assume the investigation would move quickly.

"Cases involving family members can become complicated."

Claire stared at the detective.

"Complicated for who?"

Ruiz understood the frustration.

"For everyone, but especially for Lily."

That answer brought Claire back to what mattered.

This could not become a war in which Lily was used as ammunition.

Claire asked that family members stop contacting her about the case.

Some respected the request.

Patricia did not.

She began sending gifts.

A unicorn backpack arrived first.

Then a box of children's books.

Then a huge stuffed rabbit nearly twice Lily's size.

There were no notes.

Claire refused every delivery.

On the fourth day, a florist arrived with yellow roses.

The card read only three words.

WE LOVE YOU.

Claire photographed it and gave it to Ruiz.

Daniel looked furious.

"She knows we're asking for space."

"That's why she's doing it."

The next delivery did not come to the apartment.

It came to Lily's school.

Claire received a call from the principal even though Lily had not yet returned to class.

"Mrs. Morgan, someone dropped off a gift bag for Lily."

Claire stood immediately.

"Who?"

"An older woman."

Daniel's face went pale.

"Did she give a name?"

The principal checked.

"Patricia Morgan."

Claire's pulse hammered.

A temporary safety plan had already been placed with the school.

Patricia was not authorized to contact Lily.

"Did she see Lily?"

"No. Lily isn't here today."

Claire exhaled.

"Please keep the security footage."

The principal agreed.

Ruiz was notified.

Within an hour, officers were speaking with Patricia again.

Her attorney called the school visit a grandmother's innocent attempt to show love.

Claire called it exactly what it felt like.

A test of boundaries.

That evening, someone knocked on Claire's apartment door.

Daniel checked the peephole.

He stepped back immediately.

"It's my father."

Claire's entire body went cold.

Robert knocked again.

Then his voice came through the door.

"Daniel, we need five minutes."

Daniel did not answer.

Robert lowered his voice.

"Your mother is falling apart."

Still nothing.

Then Robert said the one sentence that guaranteed the door would stay closed.

"If Claire had just minded her own business, none of this would have happened."
