Chapter 12 - The Other Son.

Caleb arrived at the hospital the next morning carrying two coffees and no idea who should receive either one.

Daniel met him in the family waiting room.

Ava watched from the doorway with Grace asleep in her arms.

The two men stopped several feet apart.

They were not identical.

They did not even look like brothers in the ordinary sense.

Yet Caleb had Vivian's green eyes and the same narrow smile Robert once had in photographs.

Daniel had Diane's grey eyes and her habit of tilting his head when listening.

Biology had left signatures across both faces.

Neither man seemed happy about how readable those signatures suddenly were.

"Daniel."

"Caleb."

Caleb held up the coffees.

"One is black."

Daniel almost laughed.

"That's mine."

"Good."

Caleb handed it over.

"The other has enough sugar to qualify as dessert."

Diane appeared behind Ava.

"That's mine."

For the first time since the DNA report, the room felt human rather than forensic.

Then Vivian entered.

Caleb saw her.

Everything changed.

Vivian stopped walking.

Her eyes moved across his face with an intensity that made him uncomfortable.

Caleb looked at Daniel.

"That's her?"

Daniel nodded.

Vivian whispered, "Caleb."

He took one step backward.

"Please don't do that."

She froze.

"Do what?"

"Say my name like you already know me."

The sentence cut through her.

"I'm sorry."

Caleb looked toward Diane.

"Mom, you okay?"

Diane nodded.

Vivian heard the word mom and flinched.

Ava saw it.

Caleb saw it too.

"She's my mother," he said.

Vivian lowered her gaze.

"I understand."

"Do you?"

Caleb's tone was not cruel.

That made it harder.

"Because I am not here to trade mothers."

Diane's eyes filled.

Daniel looked down at his coffee.

Caleb continued.

"I am here because somebody made a decision about my life before I could speak, and then kept making it every year after that."

Vivian nodded.

"You are right."

Caleb seemed surprised by the absence of resistance.

"That's it?"

"No."

Vivian drew a shaky breath.

"But I am learning that explanations can sound like excuses when the person you hurt has not even been allowed to speak."

Ava glanced at Daniel.

He looked surprised too.

Caleb sat across from Vivian.

"Did you ever wonder about me?"

Vivian's eyes closed.

"Every birthday."

"Did you know my name?"

"Yes."

"Did you ever look me up?"

Vivian hesitated.

"Once."

Diane stiffened.

"When?"

"When he graduated from high school."

Caleb stared at her.

"You came to my graduation?"

"No."

Vivian shook her head.

"I found a photograph online."

Caleb sat back.

The knowledge seemed to hurt him more than if she had never looked.

"So you saw me and still said nothing."

"Yes."

Daniel looked at Vivian.

"That's the part you have to live with."

Vivian wiped her eyes.

"I know."

Martin arrived with documents for a new independent DNA test.

This time, no one person would control the process.

Samples would be collected from Daniel, Caleb, Diane, and Vivian in the presence of all parties.

The purpose was not inheritance.

It was confirmation.

Caleb looked at the paperwork.

"What happens if it proves all of this?"

Daniel glanced toward Grace.

"Then we decide what happens next."

Vivian started to speak.

Daniel raised one hand.

"We."

Vivian closed her mouth.

Caleb gave a faint smile.

"I like that word better."

As the lab technician prepared the sample kits, Martin pulled Daniel aside.

"There is a trust issue you need to know about."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Of course there is."

Martin lowered his voice.

"If Caleb is Robert and Vivian's biological son, the Hale trust documents may place him ahead of you in the succession structure."

Daniel looked across the room at Caleb.

Caleb was helping Diane adjust her coat.

"Does he know?"

"Not yet."

Daniel turned back to Martin.

"Then he hears it from me before anyone uses it against him."

May you like

Behind them, Vivian had heard every word.

And for the first time, Ava saw real fear return to her face.
