Chapter 3 - The Son in the Doorway.

Daniel reached the doorway before Vivian could leave.
He did not touch her.
He simply stood there with the old bracelet in one hand and the note in the other.
"March seventeenth, 1991."
Vivian looked past him toward the hallway.
"Move."
"That was the day I was born."
"I know when you were born."
"Then tell me why someone sent this."
Vivian's gaze dropped to the bracelet.
For one unguarded second, recognition moved across her face.
Daniel saw it.
Ava saw it too.
"You have seen this before," Daniel said.
Vivian straightened her shoulders.
"I have seen hundreds of hospital bracelets."
"With Bennett written on them?"
Ava looked down at Grace, suddenly aware that her own last name had become part of a mystery older than her marriage.
"My family wasn't even in Chicago then," she said.
Claire examined the pouch without opening it.
"The hospital that issued this bracelet closed in 2007."
Daniel turned to her.
"How do you know?"
"The logo."
Claire pointed to the faded blue mark on the plastic.
"St. Catherine's Maternity Center."
Vivian's face changed again.
Daniel noticed.
"That's where I was born, isn't it?"
"Yes."
The answer came reluctantly.
"Why did you never mention the name?"
"Because the building closed years ago."
Daniel held up the note.
"That is not an answer."
Ava could feel the room tightening around them.
She wanted to tell Daniel to sit down.
She wanted to tell everyone to leave.
Instead, she heard herself ask the question Vivian was avoiding.
"Who was Bennett?"
Vivian looked directly at her.
"I have no idea."
Ava did not believe her.
Neither did Daniel.
His phone vibrated in his coat pocket.
He ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Then a third time.
Daniel pulled it out.
The caller was Martin Cole, the Hale family's attorney.
He answered on speaker.
"Martin, this is not a good time."
The lawyer's voice was tense.
"Actually, Daniel, it may be the only time."
Vivian moved quickly.
"Hang up."
Daniel stared at her.
"Why?"
Martin heard her voice.
"Mrs. Hale is there?"
"Yes."
A silence followed.
Then Martin exhaled.
"I received a records packet from the DNA laboratory this afternoon."
Daniel glanced at Ava.
"We have the results."
"Not those records."
Martin sounded uncomfortable.
"The lab traced an old notation attached to your mother's second sample."
Vivian's face went pale.
"Martin."
"I am sorry, Vivian."
Daniel's voice dropped.
"What notation?"
"A restricted medical reference number tied to St. Catherine's Maternity Center."
Daniel looked at the bracelet.
"Keep talking."
Martin explained that someone had requested access to Daniel's original birth file two days earlier.
The request came from an account once belonging to Robert Hale, Daniel's late father.
Robert had been dead for four years.
Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Someone used my father's credentials?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
"The archive log does not say."
Vivian finally spoke.
"This is absurd."
Martin did not respond to her.
"Daniel, there is something else."
"What?"
"One page of the birth file is missing from the archive."
Claire frowned.
"What page?"
Martin paused.
"The newborn discharge sheet."
Vivian closed her eyes.
Daniel saw it.
"You know what was on that page."
"No."
"Mom."
Vivian opened her eyes.
They were wet now, but Daniel's expression did not soften.
"I raised you," she said.
"That is not what I asked."
"I loved you every day of your life."
"Then tell me the truth."
Vivian looked toward the baby.
Her voice fell to a whisper.
"Some truths destroy more than they repair."
Daniel stepped back as if she had pushed him.
Ava felt cold despite the blanket across her legs.
Vivian moved into the hallway.
Daniel did not stop her this time.
Before she reached the elevator, Claire called after her.
"Mrs. Hale."
Vivian turned.
Claire held the evidence pouch up to the light.
"There are two names written under the label."
Daniel moved closer.
The faded paper inside the plastic had been folded over itself.
Claire angled it carefully.
Beneath BABY BOY BENNETT was another handwritten line.
