Chapter 9 - The Photograph with Two Cribs.

The hospital security office helped preserve the recording of Peter's call.

Martin contacted the proper authorities regarding the missing archival materials and the apparent extortion.

For the first time all day, the family drama moved beyond private arguments and into documented facts.

Vivian hated that.

Ava could see it in the way she kept smoothing the front of her blazer as if appearance could restore control.

Daniel sat beside Diane.

It was the first time the two of them had chosen seats near each other.

"What happened after the hospital called?" he asked Vivian.

Vivian looked at him for a long moment.

"Robert went there alone."

"Why alone?"

"He said I was too emotional."

Diane laughed bitterly.

"Convenient."

Vivian ignored her.

Robert returned home with a typed hospital statement claiming that an identification discrepancy had occurred but that no conclusive exchange could be proven.

He told Vivian there was nothing to do.

"Did you believe him?" Daniel asked.

"I wanted to."

That answer hurt more than a denial.

Vivian admitted that she had found the Baby Boy Hale bracelet in Robert's desk months later.

She asked why it was not the bracelet Daniel had worn home.

Robert told her the staff had replaced it after a printing error.

Vivian put the bracelet in the cedar chest and tried not to think about it.

Years later, when Diane filed suit, Vivian understood that Robert had not told her everything.

"So you met me," Diane said.

Vivian nodded.

"At a hotel lobby in 1996."

"You told me I would confuse the boys."

"I believed that."

"You told me good mothers know when to let go."

Vivian's eyes filled.

"I was terrified."

Diane's voice stayed calm.

"So was I, but I did not have a foundation, lawyers, or a husband who could make records disappear."

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

Ava wanted to protect him from the conversation, but there was nothing left to protect him with except truth.

Claire's phone vibrated.

She checked a message from Eleanor.

"She found something."

Everyone turned.

The missing archive box was still gone, but Eleanor had remembered a separate photo album stored in the parish office.

Volunteers at St. Catherine's used it for staff events and nursery celebrations.

One photograph was dated March 18, 1991.

Claire opened the image Eleanor had sent.

Two newborn bassinets stood side by side in a temporary nursery corridor.

One crib card read HALE.

The other read MERCER.

The cards had been attached with metal clips.

In the photograph, both clips were open.

A nurse stood between the bassinets holding two printed bracelets.

Behind her, Robert Hale was visible through the nursery window.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"My father was there the day after I was born."

Vivian nodded.

"Of course he was."

Claire zoomed in.

Robert was not looking at the babies.

He was looking at the bracelets in the nurse's hand.

Diane leaned closer.

"Who is the nurse?"

Claire's face tightened.

"Her name was Marjorie Bell."

"Is she alive?" Daniel asked.

"I don't know."

Martin searched while they waited.

Within minutes, he found an obituary.

Marjorie had died eight years earlier.

Ava felt disappointment settle over the room.

Then Martin said, "Wait."

Marjorie's obituary listed a surviving daughter.

Her name was Rebecca Lang.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Lang?"

Claire looked at him.

"Peter Lang's wife is named Rebecca."

The implication struck everyone at once.

Peter had not stumbled onto the secret years later.

He had married the daughter of the nurse who was present during the bracelet error.

Diane whispered, "He has always known."

Vivian sank into the chair.

Daniel looked at her.

"And my father paid him because Peter knew what happened that night."

Vivian's face was wet with tears.

"Yes."

Daniel stood.

"Then stop protecting Robert."

He placed the photograph on the tray beside the DNA envelope.

"Tell us what he did."
