Chapter 2 - The Result She Ordered.

Daniel closed the hospital room door behind him with deliberate care.
That small movement frightened Vivian more than anger would have.
Daniel had always become quieter when he was truly upset.
He crossed the room and kissed Ava's forehead before looking down at the baby.
"Is Grace okay?"
"She's perfect."
Only then did he turn toward his mother.
"Tell me what happened."
Vivian immediately lifted one hand.
"We should not discuss this while Ava is exhausted."
Ava stared at her.
"You had no problem discussing my supposed dishonesty while I was eight months pregnant."
Vivian looked away.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Mom."
Claire quietly asked Ava whether she wanted privacy.
Ava shook her head.
"Please stay."
The nurse nodded and moved to the far side of the room.
Ava handed Daniel the envelope.
The wax seal had already been broken once and pressed back into place.
Daniel opened it and removed six pages.
He read the first page standing beside the bed.
His eyes slowed at the second paragraph.
Then he flipped to the next page.
"Grace is mine."
Ava nodded.
"Yes."
He looked at Vivian.
"So all those things you said about Ava were wrong."
Vivian's mouth tightened.
"I was protecting the family."
"From my wife?"
"From uncertainty."
Daniel looked back at the report.
"Then what is this?"
His finger stopped midway down the third page.
The laboratory had compared DNA from Daniel, Ava, Grace, and Vivian because Vivian's attorney had requested a multigenerational relationship analysis for the family trust.
The findings were written in cold technical language.
Grace was overwhelmingly consistent with being Daniel's biological child.
Vivian, however, was excluded as Daniel's biological mother.
Daniel read that line twice.
Then a third time.
"This says you are not my mother."
Vivian's face hardened.
"It says the samples were mishandled."
"Does it?"
"Obviously."
Daniel turned the page.
There was an attached laboratory note.
Due to the unexpected result, the lab had rerun the samples under new internal identifiers.
The finding had remained the same.
Then the lab had requested a second cheek swab from Vivian.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"You gave them another sample?"
Vivian did not answer.
Ava did.
"Yesterday."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"You knew yesterday?"
Vivian's composure cracked.
"I knew there was a problem."
"And you came here today pretending everything was normal?"
"What was I supposed to do?"
Daniel gave a short laugh of disbelief.
"Maybe start with the truth."
Vivian's gaze flicked toward Grace.
"That baby is still a Hale."
Ava felt anger rise through her exhaustion.
"Her name is Grace."
Vivian ignored her.
"Whatever this report says, Daniel was raised by me."
"No one said otherwise."
"Then stop looking at me like I stole him."
The sentence landed too quickly.
Too defensively.
Daniel heard it too.
His expression sharpened.
"I didn't say you stole me."
Vivian went silent.
Ava watched the pulse in Vivian's throat.
Daniel lowered the pages.
"Why would you say that?"
Vivian reached for her handbag.
"I am leaving."
Daniel stepped sideways, not blocking her, but making her pause.
"Before you go, answer one question."
"Not here."
"Did you know?"
Vivian's eyes flashed.
"Of course not."
Daniel studied her face.
"Then why are you scared instead of confused?"
For the first time, Vivian had no quick answer.
Claire shifted near the window.
"Mr. Hale."
Daniel turned.
The nurse held a small transparent evidence pouch.
Inside it was an old yellowed strip of plastic.
A faded hospital bracelet.
"This was delivered to the nursing desk about an hour ago."
Ava stared at it.
Daniel's name was not on the bracelet.
The handwritten label read:
BABY BOY BENNETT.
Vivian made a sound that was barely a breath.
Daniel looked from the bracelet to his mother.
"Bennett?"
Ava's stomach dropped.
Bennett was her maiden name.
Claire looked equally unsettled.
"There was a note with it."
Daniel took the folded note.
Only seven words had been written in blue ink.
Ask Vivian what happened on March 17, 1991.
May you like
Daniel lifted his eyes.
Vivian was already backing toward the door.
