Chapter 7 - The File That Vanished.

Diane entered the hospital room as if she were stepping into a place she had dreamed about too many times.
She did not rush toward Daniel.
She did not try to touch him.
She simply stood a few feet away and held the blue blanket against her chest.
Daniel stared at her face.
Ava watched him search for himself in the woman's features.
The resemblance was not dramatic.
It was worse than that.
It was subtle enough to feel real.
Daniel and Diane had the same deep-set grey eyes.
They both pressed their lips together when trying not to cry.
Vivian saw it too.
"You should not be here," she said.
Diane looked at her.
"You said that to me twenty-five years ago."
Vivian recoiled.
Daniel turned sharply.
"You two met?"
Diane nodded.
"Once."
Vivian looked toward the door.
"This is not the time."
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Apparently there has never been a time."
Diane placed the blanket on the empty chair.
She removed a plastic sleeve from her purse.
Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten nursery log.
Two lines had been circled.
Crib H-17: Hale, male.
Crib H-18: Mercer, male.
A third notation had been written in red pencil.
BRACELET REPRINT AFTER TRANSFER.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Where did you get this?"
"Eleanor made a copy before the hospital destroyed the original."
Vivian immediately said, "That proves nothing."
Diane turned to her.
"Then why did Robert offer me money to stop asking questions?"
"He did not offer you money."
"He paid my mortgage."
"You accepted it."
The cruelty in Vivian's tone silenced the room.
Diane's face changed.
"I accepted help because my husband had lost his job and I had two children to feed."
"And then you withdrew the lawsuit."
"Because your lawyers told me they would keep me in court until Caleb graduated from high school."
Daniel looked at Vivian.
"Did you know they said that?"
Vivian's silence answered him.
Diane's voice trembled, but she did not raise it.
"You had resources."
"I had fear."
"So did I."
The two women stared at each other across the room.
Ava suddenly understood that this was not a simple story with one grieving mother and one villain.
It was a story about two frightened women who had been given different amounts of power.
One had used hers to close doors.
The other had spent decades knocking on them.
Daniel's phone rang.
Martin was calling again.
Daniel put him on speaker.
"We found the St. Catherine's archive server," Martin said.
"Good."
"Not exactly."
Daniel's expression tightened.
Martin explained that the digital scan of Daniel's birth file had existed until that afternoon.
At 3:12 p.m., someone with administrator access had deleted the index entry.
"Can it be recovered?"
"Possibly."
"Who accessed it?"
"The account belongs to a former records contractor named Peter Lang."
Claire frowned.
"I know that name."
"Who is he?" Daniel asked.
"He worked for Robert Hale after St. Catherine's closed."
Vivian's hand tightened around her purse.
Daniel saw it.
"You know him too."
Vivian said nothing.
Martin continued.
"There is more. Peter called my office today."
"Why?"
"He asked whether the DNA report had been released."
Daniel looked directly at Vivian.
"Who told him there was a DNA report?"
Vivian's expression finally broke.
"I did."
Diane inhaled sharply.
Daniel stood.
"Why?"
"Because I wanted him to find the old records before anyone else did."
"To explain them?"
Vivian looked at the floor.
"To remove them."
Ava felt a chill move across her skin.
Daniel stared at his mother as though he no longer recognized her.
"You tried to erase the file today."
Vivian whispered, "I tried to protect what was left of this family."
Daniel's reply was immediate.
"You nearly erased the truth twice."
Then Diane's phone buzzed.
She looked at the message and went pale.
"It's Eleanor."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What does she say?"
May you like
Diane read the screen aloud.
"If Peter reaches the church archive first, the last original log will disappear."
