Chapter 4 - The Name Beneath the Ink.

By evening, Grace had fallen asleep after feeding, but nobody in the room felt rested.
Daniel sat in the visitor chair with the DNA report spread across his knees.
Ava watched him reread the same paragraph again and again.
"You don't have to solve your entire life tonight," she said.
Daniel stared at the pages.
"My entire life just became evidence."
Ava reached for his hand.
"You're still you."
He squeezed her fingers.
"I know."
His voice said he was trying to believe it.
Claire returned with a hospital administrator named Samuel Ortiz.
Samuel carried a tablet and looked apologetic before he spoke.
"We reviewed the delivery that came to the nursing desk."
Daniel sat straighter.
"The bracelet?"
"Yes."
"Who brought it?"
Samuel turned the tablet around.
Security footage showed an elderly woman in a camel coat walking into the maternity lobby shortly after noon.
She had left the envelope and evidence pouch with reception, then walked out before anyone asked her name.
Her face was clear enough to recognize.
Daniel did not recognize her.
Ava did not either.
Claire did.
"I know her."
Everyone looked at the nurse.
Claire frowned, searching her memory.
"She used to volunteer at St. Catherine's."
Daniel stood.
"You worked there?"
"For one summer while I was in nursing school."
Claire tapped the screen.
"Her name is Eleanor Price."
Samuel searched the hospital visitor database.
There was no current contact information.
Daniel immediately called Martin.
Within twenty minutes, the attorney found an old address in a suburb west of the city.
Then he found something more disturbing.
Eleanor had once testified in a civil complaint involving St. Catherine's newborn records.
The complaint had been sealed.
Ava felt Grace move and looked down.
"What kind of complaint?"
Martin's answer came through Daniel's phone.
"A family claimed their infant had been discharged under the wrong identity."
Daniel went silent.
Ava's heart began to pound.
"What family?"
"The filing was made by a woman named Diane Mercer."
Claire's face lost color.
"I remember that name too."
Daniel stared at her.
"How?"
Claire hesitated.
"Because she came to St. Catherine's almost every month."
"Why?"
"She said someone had taken her son."
Ava felt Daniel's hand slip from hers.
He looked as though the room had tilted beneath him.
"When was her son born?"
Martin answered.
"March 17, 1991."
No one spoke.
Daniel walked to the window and pulled one blind aside.
Cars moved through the parking lot five floors below as if the world had not changed.
"Find her," he said.
Martin was quiet.
"Daniel, there is another complication."
"There is always another complication."
"Diane Mercer stopped pursuing the case after 1996."
"Why?"
"The court file says she withdrew voluntarily."
Claire shook her head.
"That doesn't sound like the woman I remember."
Martin continued.
"A month after she withdrew, a private charitable foundation paid off the mortgage on her home."
Daniel turned from the window.
"Which foundation?"
Martin did not answer immediately.
He did not need to.
Daniel already knew.
"The Hale Family Foundation," he said.
Ava closed her eyes.
Daniel's father had controlled that foundation in 1996.
Vivian had served on its board.
Daniel picked up his coat.
"Where are you going?"
Ava's voice stopped him at the door.
"To find my mother."
Ava's eyes filled.
"Which one?"
Daniel froze.
The question hurt both of them.
He came back to the bed and kissed Ava's forehead.
"I don't know yet."
Before he could leave, Ava's phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
She almost ignored it.
Then a voicemail notification appeared immediately afterward.
Ava pressed play.
An older woman's trembling voice filled the room.
"My name is Diane Mercer."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"If this is Ava Hale, please do not let Vivian destroy that envelope."

The message ended with one final sentence.
"She knows exactly who Daniel is."
