Chapter 10: Growing Pains and Grace
Returning from a quiet honeymoon in a secluded cabin in Montana, Mark and Lily settled into their new normal. However, blending two drastically different lifetimes into one cohesive family was not without its hurdles.
Eleanor, desperate to make up for twenty-five years of lost time, initially smothered Lily with affection and unsolicited advice. She frequently showed up at their downtown apartment with expensive gifts, designer clothes, and grand plans for charity galas she wanted Lily to co-host. While well-intentioned, it began to feel suffocating to Lily, who was fiercely independent and accustomed to relying only on herself.
The turning point happened one rainy Tuesday afternoon. Eleanor had taken the liberty of reorganizing Lily’s home office while she was out running errands. When Lily returned, she finally snapped, politely but firmly setting a boundary.
"Eleanor—Mom," Lily corrected herself, taking a deep breath. "I love that you want to be part of my life. I truly do. But I am twenty-five years old. I lived an entire life before I walked into that ballroom. You can't fast-forward our relationship or overwrite who I became to survive."

"You are right," she whispered, her voice laced with humility. "I'm just so terrified of losing you again. But I promise to learn to love the woman you are, not just the baby I lost."
