Chapter 14: The Breakthrough
For weeks, Chloe remained a difficult case. She skipped mentoring sessions and acted out during workshops. Lily was close to her breaking point, feeling like a failure. She confided her frustrations to Eleanor over Sunday brunch at the estate.
"I just can't reach her, Mom," Lily admitted, staring blankly at her coffee cup. "She pushes everyone away before they even get a chance to help."
Eleanor listened thoughtfully, resting a manicured hand on Lily’s arm. "Sometimes, darling, people who are used to being abandoned will test you to see if you’ll be just like the rest. They want you to leave so they can prove themselves right. Let me talk to her."
Lily was hesitant, but she agreed to bring Chloe to the estate for a supposedly "mandatory" etiquette and networking workshop. When Chloe arrived, sneering at the opulent surroundings, Eleanor didn't bat an eye. Instead of a lecture, Eleanor took Chloe to the sunroom, poured her a cup of tea, and spoke with raw honesty.
She didn't speak about wealth or success; she spoke about the twenty-five years she spent grieving a stolen child. She talked about the agonizing emptiness of an unmade bed and the desperate hope that someone out there was taking care of her little girl.

"Lily fought her whole life to survive," Eleanor told the quiet teenager. "But she built that foundation because she knows you shouldn't have to fight alone anymore. Don't punish her for trying to be the person she needed when she was your age."
The approach worked. Eleanor’s vulnerability bypassed Chloe’s defenses. When Chloe returned to the foundation the next day, she didn't offer an apology, but she sat down in the front row of the financial literacy class, pulled out a notebook, and finally started to listen.
