Chapter 15: The Next Generation

By their second wedding anniversary, the foundation had successfully housed and mentored over fifty young adults, and Chloe had just enrolled in a local nursing program with a full scholarship. The family gathered at the estate for a massive Thanksgiving dinner, a holiday that now held a profound, redefined meaning for all of them.
The dining room was warm, filled with the rich scents of roasted turkey, sage stuffing, and pie. The laughter was easy, completely devoid of the tense, performative high-society expectations that used to dictate their family gatherings.
As Richard stood up to carve the turkey, Mark gently tapped his crystal water glass with a spoon. The room quieted, all eyes turning to him and Lily.
"Before Dad expertly butchers that bird," Mark joked, earning a chuckle from Richard, "Lily and I have something we want to share."
Lily stood up, taking Mark’s hand. Her eyes were bright as she looked at Eleanor and Richard. "We have spent the last two years building a foundation to help kids who didn't have a family," she started, her voice wavering slightly with happy emotion. "But we realized it’s time we start focusing on expanding our own."
Eleanor gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth.

"I'm pregnant," Lily beamed. "We're having a baby this spring."
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down Eleanor’s cheeks as she rushed around the table to pull Lily into a tight embrace. Richard pulled Mark into a proud, bone-crushing hug. As they celebrated, Lily rested a hand on her stomach, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace. This child would never know the coldness of the system or the trauma of sudden separation. This child was going to be born into a home overflowing with absolute certainty and unconditional love.
