Chapter 13: Ghosts from the System

Despite the foundation’s rapid success, the emotional toll of the work occasionally caught up with Lily. The most significant challenge arrived on a rainy October afternoon in the form of a seventeen-year-old girl named Chloe.

Chloe was weeks away from aging out of the state’s foster care system. She was guarded, fiercely defiant, and carried a thick file of disciplinary records. When she sat across from Lily’s desk, her arms were crossed defensively, her eyes darting around the room with a mixture of distrust and resentment.

"Don't give me the savior speech," Chloe snapped before Lily could even open her mouth. "I know how this works. You rich people get your tax write-offs, and I get tossed on the street the minute I turn eighteen anyway."

Lily’s breath hitched. Looking at Chloe was like looking into a mirror reflecting her own past. The anger, the defensive sarcasm, the deep-seated fear of abandonment—it was all painfully familiar.

"I'm not going to give you a speech," Lily said quietly, leaning forward. "But I will tell you that I slept in my car for two months after I aged out because the group home changed the locks on my eighteenth birthday. I know the system, Chloe. And I built this place so you wouldn't have to sleep in yours."

Chloe blinked, the hard exterior cracking just a fraction, but she quickly masked it, standing up abruptly and storming out of the office. Lily sank back in her chair, a wave of profound emotional exhaustion washing over her.
