Chapter 10 - The Contract in the Nursery.

.The words PROJECT NOAH changed the investigation from theft to something far darker.

Detective Ramirez obtained a warrant for Halden's office before dawn.

Police found no project file there.

They found something worse.

A hidden server connected to the clinic's fetal imaging system.

It contained copies of Claire's ultrasounds, blood tests, genetic screening, and private consultation notes.

Every file had been duplicated without her consent.

Some were tagged with financial codes.

Others carried trust-law references.

One folder was marked ELIGIBILITY.

Claire read the report in silence.

Marcus sat beside her.

Neither of them spoke until Dr. Morris entered.

"Your son is stable," she said.

"The contractions have slowed significantly."

Claire exhaled.

"Thank you."

Morris hesitated.

"There is something else you need to hear from a physician, not a detective."

Marcus stood.

Morris placed a printed document on the table.

"Halden ordered genetic paternity confirmation at fourteen weeks."

Marcus stared at her.

"I never requested that."

"Claire never consented to it."

Claire's face went white.

"Why would he do that?"

Morris looked at the financial codes.

"Because the Vale family trust apparently changes when a biological descendant is born."

Marcus knew she was right.

His grandfather had written the provision decades earlier.

The birth of Marcus's first biological child would split a dormant block of voting shares into a protected descendant trust.

Those shares could not be sold, pledged, or controlled by an emergency corporate trustee.

Once Noah was born, Price's pathway to permanent control would narrow dramatically.

Claire understood from Marcus's face.

"So they had a deadline."

"Yes."

"My due date."

"Yes."

"And if they took control before Noah was born?"

Marcus swallowed.

"They could restructure the voting rights first."

Claire stared at her stomach.

"They turned my pregnancy into a corporate countdown."

For several seconds, Marcus could not answer.

He had spent his adult life believing wealth purchased options.

In Claire's pregnancy, that wealth had instead attracted people who saw a family as a structure to exploit.

Marcus reached for her hand.

She let him take it.

Ramirez entered carrying another evidence packet.

"We found Project Noah."

"Where?"

"Not in Halden's office."

"In Vivian's apartment."

Claire's eyes hardened.

"What is it?"

Ramirez sat across from them.

"A sequence plan."

"Phase one was isolation."

"Create conflict between you and Marcus."

"Phase two was documentation."

"Record emotional reactions, medical anxiety, missed sleep, anything that could be framed as instability."

"Phase three was incident."

"The staged fall?" Marcus asked.

"Yes."

"Phase four was transfer."

"Move Claire to St. Arden."

"Phase five was governance."

"Activate the Continuity Protocol, remove Marcus temporarily, and call an emergency board vote."

Claire looked at Ramirez.

"And phase six?"

Ramirez did not answer immediately.

Marcus felt dread gather in his chest.

"Detective."

Ramirez slid one page forward.

PHASE SIX: DELIVERY EVENT.

Below it were three possible outcomes.

Natural birth.

Emergency cesarean.

Maternal incapacity.

Claire stopped reading.

Marcus kept going.

Under every outcome, Vivian Cross was listed as designated temporary guardian.

Under maternal incapacity, Daniel Price became interim trust controller.

But a handwritten note had been added beside Vivian's name.

REMOVE AFTER EXECUTION.

Claire looked up.

"Price was going to betray her too."

"Yes," Ramirez said.

Marcus stared at the paper.

Vivian had helped construct a machine designed to crush Claire, believing she would benefit from the wreckage.

Price had intended to crush Vivian next.

Claire spoke quietly.

"Where is she now?"

"Still refusing to surrender unless we guarantee protection."

"From Price?"

"Price is in custody."

Ramirez shook her head.

"Vivian says he has people we haven't identified."

Marcus looked at Keller.

"How many of our security officers answered to Price?"

"We're auditing."

"That means you don't know."

"It means I don't trust the first answer."

Claire looked toward the window.

Morning had begun to pale the skyline.

Then a nurse entered carrying a box wrapped in pale blue paper.

"This was left at reception for Mrs. Vale."

Marcus stood instantly.

"Who brought it?"

"A courier."

Keller took the box before the nurse reached the table.

No return address appeared on the paper.

A silver ribbon crossed the top.

Keller scanned it for electronics and explosives.

"Clean."

Marcus opened it carefully.

Inside lay a tiny knitted baby cap.

Beneath it was a photograph.

The image showed the nursery in Marcus and Claire's penthouse.

The crib they had assembled together stood beneath the window.

Someone had entered their home overnight.

On the crib mattress sat a red folder.

A message had been written across the photograph in black ink.
