Chapter 3 - Three Missing Minutes.

.The message followed Marcus into the treatment bay like a shadow.
Claire lay propped against white pillows with monitoring bands around her stomach and a clear oxygen line beneath her nose.
The room was colder than the suite upstairs.
So was Dr. Halden's expression.
"The immediate danger appears to have passed," Halden said.
Marcus watched him instead of the monitors.
"What caused the heart-rate drop?"
"Stress."
"The fall."
"Possibly a brief compression event."
"And the magnesium order?"
Halden paused for less than a second.
It was enough.
"You saw that."
"I did."
"It was entered in anticipation of elevated blood pressure."
"She never received it."
"Then the nurse must have delayed administration."
"The nurse said the IV had been disconnected."
Halden's face tightened.
"Mr. Vale, right now your wife needs calm, not an investigation."
Claire opened her eyes.
"No."
Her voice was weak, but the single word stopped both men.
"I need him to investigate."
Halden turned toward her with professional patience.
"Claire, you have experienced trauma."
"I experienced Vivian."
"She brought a folder."
"She told me Marcus had agreed I should sign temporary medical authority to her if I became irrational before the delivery."
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"I never agreed to that."
"I know that now."
Claire's eyes filled.
"But she showed me your signature."
Marcus leaned closer.
"What happened next?"
"I refused."
"She said I was making everything harder."
"She picked up the water glass and poured it onto the rug."
"Then she dropped the glass."
Marcus pictured the glittering pieces.
"She staged the fall before she touched you."
Claire nodded.
"She wanted it to look like I slipped."
Halden stepped forward.
"This level of detail may be unreliable immediately after a traumatic event."
Marcus turned on him.
"Leave."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"I am her physician."
"And you entered an order she never received, on a chart that may already be compromised."
"Marcus," Claire whispered.
He looked back at her.
She was staring at Halden.
Not angrily.
Fearfully.
"I heard his voice before you came in," she said.
Halden's face changed.
Only slightly.
But Marcus saw it.
Claire saw it too.
Her fingers tightened around the blanket as if she had finally found confirmation that the fear she had carried for weeks was not imagination.
Marcus noticed that small movement and hated how much evidence she had needed before the room began treating her fear as fact.
Claire continued.
"Vivian was on the phone after she locked the door."
"She said, 'Adrian, he's early.'"
Silence filled the bay.
Halden's hand moved toward his coat pocket.
Marcus stepped between him and the bed.
"Take your hand out."
Halden stared at him.
"Now."
Slowly, the doctor withdrew his hand.
It held a phone.
The screen was already unlocked.
A message preview flashed across it before Halden covered the display.
V: DELETE THE REST.
Marcus saw enough.
He grabbed the emergency cord beside Claire's bed and pulled it.
An alarm sounded.
Halden backed toward the door.
"You are making an extraordinary accusation."
"I haven't accused you of anything yet."
Marcus's voice was terrifyingly calm.
"I'm making sure you don't leave with that phone."
Two nurses entered.
Then Vale Security Chief Owen Keller appeared behind them.
He was broad shouldered, gray at the temples, and usually impossible to surprise.
Today he looked furious.
"Sir, we have a problem."
Marcus nodded toward Halden.
"So do I."
Keller looked from the doctor to Claire.
Then he held out a small black device sealed in an evidence bag.
"We found this attached behind the hallway access panel outside Suite 47B."
"What is it?" Marcus asked.
"A credential repeater."
"It copies access tokens from any authorized phone that passes close enough."
Marcus understood immediately.
His own phone had been in that hallway every day for a week.
"Someone cloned my security key."
"Yes."
Keller looked at Halden.
"And the repeater was registered on the network under a medical maintenance account."
Halden's jaw clenched.
Keller continued.
"There's more."
"We recovered part of the deleted footage from a redundant cache."
Marcus's heart hammered.
"Show me."
Keller handed him a tablet.
The video was grainy and silent.
It showed Vivian entering Claire's room.
It showed her locking the door.
It showed her placing a folder on the bed.
Then the image broke into blocks of digital noise.
For two seconds, the picture returned.
Vivian was no longer across the room.
She was directly in front of Claire.
Her hands were on Claire's shoulders.
Claire was stumbling backward.
The video froze.
The final recovered frame showed Dr. Halden standing outside the suite door.
May you like
He was looking straight into the camera.
And he was smiling.
