Chapter 7 - The Camera Behind the Mirror.

.Dr. Morris gave Marcus ten minutes to solve the security problem.

After that, she said, medical necessity would decide for them.

Marcus did not argue.

He called Vale Tower from a hospital landline because Keller no longer trusted the cellular network.

Ethan Reed answered on the third ring.

His voice was low.

"Vivian is still here."

"Is Price with her?"

"No."

"She keeps asking where he is."

Marcus looked at Claire.

Her suspicion had been right.

"Can Vivian hear you?"

"No."

"I'm in the records room."

"Listen carefully."

"Do not challenge her."

"Do not let the board vote."

"What do I tell them?"

"Tell them the medical evidence is contested and any succession action exposes them personally."

"That will buy ten minutes, maybe fifteen."

"I need twenty."

"Then give me something stronger."

Marcus looked at Keller.

"Find me something stronger."

Keller left with two officers to inspect the communications room.

Marcus returned to Claire's bedside.

She was breathing between contractions, her face drawn with exhaustion.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"For what?"

"For every time I thought peace meant asking you to ignore something that made you uncomfortable."

Claire stared at him.

"This is not the time."

"I know."

"But I need you to know I understand now."

"You trusted Vivian because your father trusted her."

"Yes."

"You trusted Halden because he had the right title."

"Yes."

"And you trusted security because you paid them."

Marcus looked down.

Claire squeezed his hand.

"Trust me now."

"I do."

"Then stop looking at the door."

He frowned.

"What?"

"Vivian kept looking at the mirror."

Marcus followed her gaze.

A decorative mirror hung above the small desk across the room.

It had been moved from Suite 47B during the emergency transfer because Claire had insisted on keeping several personal items nearby.

Marcus remembered seeing the mirror in their penthouse years before.

Vivian had given it to Claire at the baby shower.

He crossed the room.

The frame was heavy silver, too ornate for the hospital.

He lifted it from the wall.

A thin black cable ran from the back into a recessed battery pack.

Marcus's blood turned cold.

"Do not touch anything else," Claire said.

He lowered the mirror carefully onto the desk.

A tiny lens sat behind one decorative bead in the frame.

Not a hospital camera.

A private one.

Marcus called Keller.

"Come back."

Keller returned in less than a minute.

He examined the device and swore.

"Wireless microcamera."

"Local storage plus cloud relay."

"How long has it been recording?" Claire asked.

Keller checked the battery module.

"Could be weeks."

Claire's face collapsed.

Marcus saw the violation register in her eyes.

The bedroom conversations.

The medical exams.

The nights she cried when she could not sleep.

Someone had watched all of it.

Keller connected an isolated forensic reader.

The device contained dozens of short clips.

Most were motion activated.

One recording had been created at 2:11 a.m. four nights earlier.

Marcus played it.

The angle showed Claire sleeping in the hospital bed.

The door opened.

Vivian entered.

Then Daniel Price followed.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Price moved directly to Claire's bedside cabinet.

Vivian whispered something.

The camera's microphone was weak but audible.

Keller increased the volume.

Price's voice emerged through static.

"She won't sign while he's here."

Vivian answered.

"Then make sure he isn't."

Price looked toward the sleeping Claire.

"You said she was already frightened."

"She is."

"Good."

He opened the cabinet and photographed every medication label.

Vivian stood near the bed.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

"What happens after the transfer?" she asked.

Price smiled.

"The same thing that happens in every clean succession."

"The unstable person loses control."

"The useful person gains it."

Vivian whispered, "You told me Marcus would remain chair."

Price turned to her.

"I told you what you needed to hear."

The clip ended.

Claire stared at the blank screen.

Marcus looked at Keller.

"Vivian thought she was helping remove Claire."

"But Price intended to remove me too."

Keller nodded grimly.

"The Continuity Protocol puts him above both of you during a declared family security emergency."

"Then after twenty-four hours?" Claire asked.

"It expires unless a court extends it."

Marcus looked at the forged psychiatric petition.

"He planned to get that extension."

Another clip appeared in the camera index.

Recorded that morning.

7:31 a.m.

Claire's hand flew to Marcus's wrist.

"That's when Vivian came in."

Marcus opened it.

The footage showed Vivian locking Suite 47B.

She placed a folder on Claire's bed.

The audio was much clearer than the hospital camera.

"Sign it," Vivian said.

"No," Claire answered.

"You don't understand what is happening."

"I understand you're trying to take control of my medical decisions."

Vivian's expression hardened.

"I'm trying to stop Marcus from destroying everything because you're scared."

Claire stood.

"Get out."

Vivian grabbed her arm.

Claire pulled away.

Vivian shoved her.

Claire stumbled into the table.

The glass fell.

Then Claire slipped on the water Vivian had poured onto the rug.

She hit the floor.

Marcus felt something inside him go quiet.

The truth was finally complete.

But the recording continued.

Vivian knelt beside Claire.

For one moment, horror crossed her face.

Then the suite intercom clicked on.

Daniel Price's voice came through.

"Leave her."

Vivian looked toward the hidden camera.

"What?"

"Leave her exactly where she is."

"She's bleeding."

"Marcus is thirty seconds away."

Vivian stood slowly.

"You planned this."

Price laughed softly over the speaker.

May you like

"No, Vivian."

"You did."
