Chapter 9 - The Road Without Cameras.

.By midnight, Daniel Price was in police custody and Vivian Cross was negotiating surrender through an attorney.

Marcus should have felt relief.

Instead, he stood in the surgical waiting area and watched a printer produce page after page of documents carrying his forged signature.

The newborn guardianship consent was only the beginning.

There was a temporary psychiatric evaluation request for Claire.

There was a corporate incapacity notice for Marcus.

There was a beneficiary amendment involving the Vale family trust.

And there was a life insurance rider Marcus had never seen before.

Every document had been created during the previous six weeks.

Every one used data gathered from Claire's hospital room or Marcus's cloned security credentials.

Detective Ramirez spread the pages across a conference table.

"This was not improvised."

Marcus stared at the signatures.

"No."

"Price wanted a legal paper trail that would survive the first accusation."

Ramirez nodded.

"He expected Vivian to be blamed for the physical incident."

"He expected Halden to authenticate the medical side."

"And he expected himself to appear as the responsible security officer cleaning up a family crisis."

Marcus looked through the glass wall toward Claire's room.

Dr. Morris had managed to slow the contractions.

The baby remained inside.

For now.

"What did Vivian get?" Ramirez asked.

"Control of the company?"

"She thought she would."

"But Price's real target was the family trust."

Marcus pulled one page free.

The trust controlled voting shares worth billions.

If both Marcus and Claire were declared temporarily incompetent during a verified security emergency, an emergency trustee could assume control.

Daniel Price had quietly inserted himself as alternate emergency trustee in an amendment filed two years earlier.

Marcus had signed the amendment.

He remembered the day.

There had been forty documents on his desk after his father's death.

Price had told him it was routine continuity language.

Marcus had signed without reading closely enough.

He closed his eyes.

"One careless signature."

Ramirez shook her head.

"One fraudulent scheme."

"Don't confuse the two."

Marcus appreciated the distinction but did not use it to excuse himself.

Keller entered carrying an evidence envelope.

"We found this in Price's locker."

Inside was a keycard for St. Arden Private Center.

Ramirez frowned.

"I thought that place was a maternity recovery clinic."

"It is," Keller said.

"Mostly."

"What does mostly mean?"

"It also operates a private psychiatric observation wing."

Marcus understood.

"That's where they planned to take Claire."

Keller nodded.

"Once she was there, Halden's evaluation and Vivian's statement could have kept her isolated long enough for the trust hearing."

Claire's voice came from the doorway.

"And my baby?"

Everyone turned.

She stood supported by a nurse, wrapped in a hospital robe.

Marcus crossed the room immediately.

"You should be in bed."

"I have been in bed while people decided my entire life for me."

"I'm done listening from another room."

Marcus did not argue.

Claire sat at the table.

"What was supposed to happen to my son?"

Keller looked uncomfortable.

Ramirez answered.

"The guardianship form would have allowed a court-appointed temporary custodian if you were considered medically incapacitated and Marcus was unavailable."

"Who did they nominate?"

Ramirez slid the page across.

Claire read the name.

Vivian Cross.

She laughed once.

A terrible, exhausted sound.

"She wanted my husband, my company, my child, or all three?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't think she understood all of Price's plan."

"She pushed me."

"I know."

"She watched me fall."

"I know."

"Then I don't care what part she misunderstood."

Marcus met her eyes.

"Neither do I."

Ramirez's phone rang.

She answered and listened.

Her expression changed.

"Vivian's attorney says she will surrender."

"When?" Marcus asked.

"She won't come to the hospital."

"She wants a neutral location."

"Police headquarters?"

"No."

Ramirez looked irritated.

"She claims she has evidence against Price that exists nowhere else."

"Where does she want to meet?"

"An old Vale property outside the city."

Marcus knew it immediately.

The abandoned executive training center on Lake Mercer.

His father had closed it ten years ago.

The road there crossed seven miles of forest with almost no public cameras.

Keller shook his head.

"It is a trap."

Ramirez agreed.

"Probably."

Claire looked at Marcus.

"You're thinking about going."

"No."

The answer surprised everyone, including Marcus.

"I'm thinking about making her come to us."

He turned to Ramirez.

"Tell Vivian she has thirty minutes to send one piece of evidence."

"If it is real, police can negotiate location and protection."

"If she refuses, arrest her when you find her."

Ramirez nodded.

Twenty-three minutes later, a video arrived.

It showed Daniel Price sitting across from Vivian in a dark room.

The date stamp was six weeks old.

Price slid a document toward her.

Vivian looked at it and said, "Marcus will never agree to this."

Price replied, "He already did."

Then he placed a second file on the table.

The label was visible for only one second.

PROJECT NOAH.

Claire gripped Marcus's hand.

Noah was the name they had chosen for their unborn son.

They had told only three people.

Marcus.

May you like

Claire.

And Dr. Halden.
