Chapter 13 - The Last Recording.

.There was no dramatic choice between saving the evidence and saving Claire.
Marcus chose Claire before anyone asked.
Dr. Morris called for an emergency delivery room on the same floor.
Nurses converted a procedure suite that used mechanical locks instead of network access.
Ramirez sent officers to breach the central server room.
Keller, still at the penthouse, transmitted the automation keys found on Trent's laptop.
Everyone did one job.
For once, Marcus did not try to do all of them.
He stayed beside his wife.
At zero, his phone flashed red.
CRITICAL TRANSFER EVENT ACTIVE.
The hospital intercom instructed staff to move Claire Vale to St. Arden Private Center.
No one moved her.
City police had already blocked the elevators.
The ambulance request went out.
Ramirez canceled it manually.
The trust system received the false medical incapacity notice.
Ethan Reed rejected it at Vale Tower and suspended all emergency governance authority by unanimous board vote.
Price's perfect automated crisis unfolded into empty space.
The machine still moved.
Nobody obeyed it.
Claire screamed as another contraction tore through her.
Marcus held her hand.
"You can crush every bone in my fingers if you want."
"Don't tempt me."
Dr. Morris almost smiled.
Then the fetal monitor dipped.
The mood changed instantly.
Morris called for oxygen and repositioning.
The heartbeat recovered slowly.
Marcus saw fear in Claire's eyes.
"This is real?" she asked.
Morris nodded.
"This one is real."
Claire looked at Marcus.
He brought his forehead to hers.
"No screen matters more than the doctor standing here."
She breathed through another contraction.
Outside the room, Ramirez received word that police had opened the server room.
Inside they found a compact computer running Price's scripts.
They also found a phone connected by cable.
The phone belonged to Vivian.
Marcus heard the report through the open doorway.
"How is her phone in the hospital?"
Ramirez looked at the arrested transport man.
He refused to speak.
A technician unlocked the device under warrant.
There were hundreds of messages between Vivian and Price.
Most confirmed what they already knew.
One file did not.
It was a video labeled IF DANIEL WINS.
Ramirez hesitated before playing it.
Claire heard her.
"Play it."
Marcus looked at his wife.
"Now?"
"I have spent two months being discussed in rooms I wasn't allowed into."
"I'm done with that."
Ramirez opened the file.
Vivian appeared on screen wearing the same dark red satin gown from Suite 47B.
She sat in a parked car.
Her face looked exhausted.
"If you are watching this, Daniel Price has either betrayed me or I finally found enough courage to betray him."
Claire's expression did not soften.
Vivian continued.
"I knew about the Continuity Protocol because I witnessed the original document."
"I told Daniel it existed."
"I believed Marcus was destroying his father's company by putting Claire before the board."
Marcus stared at the screen.
Vivian swallowed.
"That is the lie I told myself."
"The truth is simpler."
"I hated that Claire could ask Marcus to leave a meeting and he would go."
"I hated that she had a place in his life I could never earn through usefulness."
"So when Daniel said Claire was unstable, I helped him prove it."
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
Vivian's voice cracked.
"I moved medication."
"I repeated private medical details."
"I installed the nursery monitor."
"I helped create the documents."
"I pushed her."
"No one made me do those things."
Marcus felt no satisfaction hearing the confession.
Only clarity.
Vivian continued.
"But Daniel planned more than I agreed to."
"He recruited Halden years ago through gambling debts."
"He controls Mason Trent through stolen financial records."
"And he has one last person inside Vale Memorial."
Ramirez leaned closer.
Vivian looked directly into the camera.
"Her name is Celia Ward."
Dr. Morris stopped moving.
Marcus noticed.
"Who is Celia Ward?"
Morris's face went pale.
"Our night nursing supervisor."
Every head turned toward the doorway.
A woman stood there in navy scrubs holding a medication syringe.
Her badge read CELIA WARD.
She looked at the phone playing Vivian's confession.
Then at Claire.
For one second, nobody moved.
Ward threw the syringe onto the floor and ran.
Ramirez chased her into the corridor.
Police shouted from both ends.
Ward turned toward the stairwell and found it blocked.
She reached into her pocket.
Marcus saw the black device before the officers did.
A remote trigger.
He shouted.
"Her hand!"
Ramirez tackled Ward against the wall.
The trigger fell and skidded across the floor.
A technician picked it up.
Its screen showed one command ready to send.
PURGE SERVER / DELETE ALL LOCAL EVIDENCE.
Ward had been seconds from erasing the hospital copy.
Ramirez cuffed her.
Inside the procedure room, Claire cried out again.
Dr. Morris rushed back.
She checked the monitor and looked at Marcus.
"No more investigations."
"No more interruptions."
"Your son is coming now."
Marcus returned to Claire's side.
The last conspirator had been caught.
May you like
The last recording had survived.
But as Claire's pain intensified, Marcus understood that none of those victories guaranteed the one outcome he wanted most.
