Chapter 6 - A Name on the Medical Order.

.The emergency lights came on in thin red strips along the floor.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then Claire's monitor began screaming.

Marcus turned and ran back into the room.

Dr. Morris was already beside the bed, checking the fetal tracing by the glow of a battery-powered screen.

"The baby's heart rate dipped again," she said.

"Generator power should engage in less than a minute."

Keller stepped into the doorway with his weapon drawn but pointed down.

"The blackout is only on this floor."

Marcus looked at him.

"That isn't a power failure."

"No."

"It's a controlled shutdown."

Claire gripped Marcus's hand.

Another contraction hit.

She squeezed hard enough to hurt him.

"Don't let anyone move me."

"I won't."

Footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Keller raised a hand.

"Stay inside."

A flashlight beam swept across the doorway.

A man in blue surgical scrubs appeared pushing a portable incubator.

Behind him came a woman wearing a neonatal transport jacket.

"Transfer team," the man said.

"We have authorization for Claire Vale."

Dr. Morris stepped into the doorway.

"No transfer was ordered by me."

The man held up a tablet.

"It was approved by Dr. Halden."

"He is no longer treating this patient."

"The order is active."

Marcus moved beside Morris.

"Show me."

The man hesitated.

Keller noticed first.

His hand went toward his radio.

"Where is your hospital badge?"

The transport worker looked down.

There was a clear plastic sleeve clipped to his chest.

It was empty.

Keller drew his weapon fully.

"Hands where I can see them."

The man abandoned the incubator and ran.

The woman turned the opposite direction.

Keller chased the man.

Marcus did not move from the doorway.

He watched the woman disappear around the corner and understood the tactic.

They wanted him to leave Claire.

He refused.

The portable incubator stood in the hallway.

Something inside it began to beep.

Dr. Morris stared at it.

"That is not an infant monitor."

Marcus backed into the room.

"Close the door."

Morris slammed it shut.

Keller shouted from the corridor.

"Move away from the incubator!"

A second later, a burst of white vapor erupted beneath its plastic hood.

The smoke alarm triggered.

The corridor filled with chemical fog.

Marcus dragged a chair beneath the door handle while Morris sealed the bottom gap with folded blankets.

Claire coughed.

"What is that?"

"Probably a distraction," Morris said.

"Probably?" Marcus snapped.

"It smells like a theatrical smoke compound."

"Not toxic at this concentration."

The generator finally restored the overhead lights.

The monitors stabilized.

Keller returned wearing a respirator from an emergency cabinet.

"The man got into the stairs."

"You lost him?"

"I chose the room over the chase."

Marcus nodded once.

It was the same choice Marcus should have made sooner in every part of his life.

Keller handed him a tablet recovered from the abandoned incubator.

"The transfer order is real in the hospital system."

Marcus looked down.

Claire Vale.

Immediate neonatal transfer authorization.

St. Arden Private Center.

Beneath the order was an electronic signature.

Not Halden's.

Not Vivian's.

Marcus Vale.

Again.

But this time a second field had been left visible.

AUTHORIZATION CREATED BY: D. PRICE.

Daniel Price.

Keller stared at the name as if it had struck him physically.

"I hired him eight years ago."

Marcus handed the tablet back.

"Then you know how he thinks."

"I thought I did."

Claire spoke from the bed.

"Maybe Vivian isn't controlling him."

Marcus turned.

"What do you mean?"

"She was talking to someone in my room."

"She sounded nervous."

"Vivian never sounds nervous when she thinks she is in charge."

Claire's observation landed with disturbing precision.

Marcus remembered Vivian in the suite after the security alert.

The fear on her face had appeared before she knew what the footage showed.

Maybe she was not afraid of being exposed.

Maybe she was afraid of someone else discovering she had failed.

Keller's radio crackled.

A security officer reported Daniel Price's last known location.

Vale Tower.

Marcus frowned.

"Ethan said Vivian was in the boardroom."

Keller nodded.

"Price entered the building eleven minutes before her."

Claire looked between them.

"So who called the meeting?"

Marcus opened the emergency board portal.

The meeting notice appeared at the top.

Emergency succession review.

Submitted by Acting Security Trustee.

Daniel Price.

Marcus had never given him that title.

But his father had.

A memory surfaced from seven years earlier, after a kidnapping threat against the Vale family.

Marcus's father had created a dormant security clause giving the chief protection officer temporary control over family movement, communications, and emergency medical transportation during a verified threat.

Marcus had assumed the clause died with his father.

Keller read his face.

"You remember the Continuity Protocol."

Marcus nodded.

Claire whispered, "What protocol?"

Marcus felt sick as he answered.

"A family emergency rule."

"If activated, security can override normal authority for twenty-four hours."

"Even yours?"

"Yes."

"And if Price activated it?"

Marcus looked at Keller.

Keller finished the thought.

"Then every locked door, transfer order, and security team in this building may legally believe Daniel Price outranks Marcus."

Claire's next contraction began.

This time the fetal monitor dipped and did not recover immediately.

Dr. Morris leaned over the bed.

"We are done discussing corporate protocols."

"We need an operating room available now."

Marcus looked toward the fog-filled corridor.

The nearest surgical floor was four levels below.

And every elevator between them was under Daniel Price's control.
