Chapter 1 - The Seam of Deception

The crystal chandelier cast a cold, fractured light across the grand ballroom.
Chloe stood motionless at the center of the room.
Today was supposed to be her wedding day.
Instead, it felt like a carefully orchestrated execution.
Guests whispered behind crystal champagne flutes.
Liam, her fiancé, stood a few feet away, awkwardly adjusting his tuxedo cuffs.
He avoided her gaze completely.
Eleanor, his mother, marched across the polished marble floor like a general inspecting the trenches.
Her dark blue dress swept behind her, a stark contrast to the surrounding white florals.
She stopped inches from Chloe, her eyes scanning the intricate lace of the wedding gown.
There was no warmth in her expression, only a venomous satisfaction.
"Did you honestly think this would work?"
Eleanor’s voice was a low hiss, designed only for Chloe’s ears.
Chloe kept her breathing steady, holding the older woman’s gaze.
"I don't know what you mean, Eleanor."
Eleanor reached out suddenly, her manicured fingers digging into the delicate lace at Chloe's collarbone.
She pulled the fabric tight, twisting it slightly against Chloe's skin.
"This dress was never meant for someone like you."
The physical violation sent a shockwave of silence through the immediate crowd.
Liam finally looked up, his face pale and frozen.
"Mom, please," Liam muttered weakly, stepping half a pace forward.
"Stay out of this, Liam," Eleanor snapped without breaking eye contact with the bride.
"She needs to understand her place before she ruins this family's legacy."
Chloe looked down at the hand bunching her dress.
She didn't pull away.
She didn't cry.
A quiet, profound calm washed over her features.
She had given them every opportunity to be decent.
They had chosen otherwise.
"You have no idea," Chloe said softly.
May you like
Her voice was perfectly level, echoing slightly in the sudden quiet of the hall.
"Who you just humiliated."
