Chapter 5 - The Departure

Chloe turned away from the devastated groom.
She didn't look back at Eleanor, who had collapsed into a gilded guest chair.
The older woman buried her face in her hands, sobbing with a harsh, ragged sound.
It was an ugly, desperate noise that echoed through the stunned crowd.
Chloe handed the heavy leather folder back to the official.
"Keep this safe," Chloe instructed him quietly.
"Of course, Miss Mason," the official replied with a slight, respectful bow.
She reached down and gathered the voluminous skirt of her white lace dress.
It felt completely different now.
It was no longer a symbol of a trap, but a banner of her absolute freedom.
She took her first deliberate step back down the long, white aisle.
"Chloe, wait!" Liam shouted, his voice breaking with sheer panic.
He lunged forward and grabbed her wrist.
His grip was tight and frantic, like a drowning man grasping at a fragile lifeline.
Chloe stopped walking and slowly looked down at his hand.
She didn't try to rip her arm away.
She simply stared at his trembling fingers until the heavy, suffocating silence forced him to loosen his hold.
"Don't do this," Liam begged, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes and ruining his handsome facade.
"We can fix this, we can start over without her."
"There is no 'we' anymore, Liam," Chloe said softly.
"You allowed her to tear me down every single day of our engagement, and you never once defended me."
"I was scared of her," Liam whispered, his face flushing with deep, humiliating shame.
"I know," Chloe replied, her tone softening into a moment of genuine pity.
"But a marriage cannot survive on cowardice."
She pulled her arm completely out of his loosened grip.
The wealthy guests parted like the sea as she resumed her walk toward the grand oak doors.
No one whispered anymore.
No one dared to raise a glass or make a sound.
They simply watched the new owner of the Mason empire walk away from the wreckage of the family.

Chloe pushed the heavy doors open with both hands, letting the bright afternoon sunlight flood the dark, tense ballroom.
She stepped out into the fresh air and took a deep breath, finally entirely free.
