Chapter 8 - The New Foundation
The morning sun broke through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long shadows across the marble floor.
Chloe stood silently in the massive walk-in closet of the penthouse.
The intricate white lace wedding dress lay draped over a velvet chair in the corner.
It looked like a hollow ghost of a life she had narrowly escaped.
She turned away from it and reached for a sharp, tailored black suit instead.
Today was not a day for mourning a lost relationship.
Today was the day she officially took control of the Mason empire.
When she walked into the formal dining room, Mr. Sterling was already waiting.
A neat stack of blue financial folders rested on the long mahogany table.
He stood up immediately as she entered, offering a polite nod.
"Good morning, Miss Mason," he greeted her smoothly.
"Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Chloe replied, pouring herself a cup of black coffee.
"The executive board has convened in the primary downtown conference room," he informed her.
"They are incredibly anxious to formally meet you."
Chloe took a slow sip of the bitter, hot coffee, letting it clear her mind.
"I imagine they are terrified," Chloe said calmly.
"They allowed Eleanor to siphon millions of dollars under their noses before I intervened."
"Indeed," Mr. Sterling agreed, adjusting his silver tie slightly.
"Several senior members have already attempted to submit their resignations this morning."
Chloe set the delicate coffee cup down on its saucer with a sharp clink.
"Do not accept any of them yet," Chloe instructed firmly.
"I want to look each of them in the eye."
"I need to determine who is actually competent and who is merely a coward."
Mr. Sterling smiled faintly, a look of genuine respect crossing his seasoned features.
"I will have the car brought around immediately," he said, turning toward the door.
Chloe picked up the first blue folder and tucked it under her arm.
