Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Facade

The ballroom remained suffocatingly silent.

Eleanor stared at the leather folder as if it were a venomous snake.

Her carefully constructed facade of superiority crumbled into dust before the eyes of her high-society guests.

"You're lying," Eleanor whispered, though the violent tremor in her hands betrayed her panic.

"The board would never agree to this without consulting me first."

Chloe signaled to the official with a slight, almost imperceptible nod of her head.

He reached into the breast pocket of his tailored suit jacket and retrieved a small, silver flash drive.

"The board was presented with a comprehensive audit of your offshore wire transfers," the official explained calmly.

"They were given a choice between facing immediate federal prosecution for corporate embezzlement or approving an absolute transfer of assets."

"They overwhelmingly chose self-preservation, Mrs. Mason."

Liam turned slowly toward his mother.

His face shifted from utter confusion to a dawning, horrified realization.

"Mom?" Liam's voice cracked, sounding like a frightened child rather than a groom.

"Is it true?"

Eleanor could not bring herself to meet her son's eyes.

She stared intensely at the polished marble floor, her shoulders suddenly slumped and defeated.

"I was going to win it all back," Eleanor muttered, almost to herself.

"It was just a temporary shortfall, Liam, I swear to you."

Liam staggered backward, running a shaky hand through his perfectly styled brown hair.

The wealth he had always relied upon, the elite status he had used as a shield his entire life, was entirely gone.

"You gambled away our entire family legacy?" Liam asked, his voice echoing loudly in the vast, quiet room.

Chloe watched the pathetic exchange with a profound sense of sadness.

She took no genuine pleasure in witnessing this destruction.

She had simply refused to be a casualty of their toxic deception.

"I gave you both every chance to be honest," Chloe said quietly.

"I waited until the very last moment to see if either of you would show a single ounce of decency before I finalized the paperwork."

She looked directly at Liam, her eyes completely devoid of the love they had once held.

"You consistently chose your mother's cruelty over our future, Liam."

"And now, you can share in her ruin."
