Chapter 1 - The Hand on Her Shoulder.

The chandeliers of the Bellamy Grand burned with a cold white brilliance that made every diamond in the room look sharper than glass.

Evelyn Hart stood near the center aisle in a black one-shoulder evening gown, her reddish-brown hair falling straight over one side of her face.

A black jacket rested across her forearms, hiding the faint dirt stains near her wrist and the small flash drive taped inside the lining.

No one watching her would have guessed she had spent the last twenty minutes crawling through a service passage behind the east ballroom.

No one would have guessed the scratches on her cheek had come from a rusted maintenance gate that Adrian Vale's security team had locked behind her.

The orchestra kept playing.

Champagne kept moving from hand to hand.

And the wealthiest people in the city pretended not to notice that Evelyn was walking toward the exit without saying goodbye.

She had almost reached the marble corridor when a hand closed hard around her bare shoulder.

Evelyn stopped.

She did not gasp.

She did not turn immediately.

She simply looked down at Adrian Vale's fingers and counted one silent second.

Then she turned.

Adrian stood behind her in a perfect black tuxedo and bow tie, his dark hair still neat despite the anger in his face.

His voice was low enough to sound civilized to the guests nearest them.

"You're not leaving after what you did."

A dozen conversations died at once.

Evelyn looked into his eyes without blinking.

"Take your hand off me."

Adrian tightened his grip instead.

That was the mistake.

Evelyn caught his wrist, stepped across his stance, and used his own forward weight against him.

The movement was fast, controlled, and almost quiet.

Adrian went over her shoulder and struck the side of a gold champagne cart with a violent metallic crash.

Crystal glasses scattered across the marble in a bright ringing wave.

The orchestra stopped.

Every face in the grand hall turned toward them.

Evelyn released his arm and stepped back before he could reach for her again.

Adrian lay stunned beside the overturned cart, more humiliated than injured.

His security chief moved forward.

Evelyn raised one hand.

"Don't."

Something in her voice stopped him.

She pulled the black jacket around her arms, covering the hidden drive.

Then she walked toward the towering exit doors as if nothing in the room had the power to delay her anymore.

Behind her, Adrian pushed himself upright.

"Evelyn!"

She did not look back.

"You should have let me go."

The doors opened.

Rain swept across the steps beyond them, turning the city lights into long blue and pink reflections.

A sleek black car waited at the curb with its rear door already open.

Evelyn crossed the wet stone, entered the back seat, and shut the door behind her.

The driver pulled away before Adrian's men reached the street.

For the first time that night, Evelyn allowed herself to breathe deeply.

She removed the flash drive from the jacket lining and closed her fingers around it.

Then she lifted her phone and called the only number she still trusted.

A woman answered on the second ring.

"Do you have it?"

Evelyn watched the Bellamy Grand disappear behind sheets of rain.

"It's finished."

There was a pause on the line.

Then the woman whispered the words Evelyn had not expected.

May you like

"No, Evelyn."

"It's just beginning."
