Chapter 9 - The Story They Sold.

By sunrise, every major local news site carried the same photograph.
It showed Adrian on the marble floor beside the overturned champagne cart.
The headline beneath it accused Evelyn Hart of assaulting a philanthropist after being confronted for corporate theft.
The footage began at the exact moment she turned and flipped him.
It did not show his hand grabbing her first.
It did not show the service corridor.
It did not show Adrian blocking her exit.
Someone had edited the gala security recording before releasing it.
Nora watched the coverage from a safe office above a closed printing company.
"He's moving fast."
Evelyn stood by the window, still wearing the black gown beneath her jacket.
"He has to."
"Why?"
"Because people believe the first clean story they hear."
Her father had lost everything that way.
A complicated financial conspiracy became one simple sentence.
Thomas Mercer stole the money.
Now Adrian was building another sentence.
Evelyn Hart attacked him and stole company data.
Daniel entered with a tablet.
"It gets worse."
A police bulletin showed Evelyn's photograph.
Authorities wanted to question her regarding unauthorized access to Vale systems and the gala incident.
Nora frowned.
"Questioning is not an arrest warrant."
"Not yet."
Evelyn remained calm.
"We don't run from the police."
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"We're currently hiding above a printing company."
"We are avoiding Adrian."
"The distinction may become philosophical if he controls the story."
Nora turned the gala drive back on using an isolated computer.
"Then we change the story with evidence."
The planted drive contained mostly accurate documents.
That made it useful bait.
Adrian could later claim everything on it had been fabricated by Evelyn.
But the metadata exposed one mistake.
Several files had been created before Thomas Mercer's original investigation became public.
They referred to accounts that supposedly did not exist until years later.
Someone inside Vale had preserved original timestamps.
"This can reopen the Mercer case," Nora said.
"Not enough," Evelyn replied.
"A clever defense team will call it corrupted data."
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Margaret again.
This time there was only audio.
"Evelyn, he moved me."
Margaret sounded breathless but focused.
"I'm in a rehearsal room under the Arts Center stage."
"There are two guards outside."
"Adrian is coming back at eight."
A muffled sound interrupted her.
Then Margaret hurried.
"Listen to me."
"The final account is not just money."
"Victor stored payment records for judges, contractors, charity boards, and city officials."
"Adrian wants the account because whoever owns those records owns everyone connected to them."
The recording stopped.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"Four hundred million dollars and a blackmail archive."
Nora's expression hardened.
"If Adrian gets it, clearing your father's name won't matter."
Evelyn nodded.
"Because he'll control the people who decide what the truth is."
A second message arrived from Margaret.
One photograph.
A stage door.
A keypad.
And reflected faintly in the metal surface was Margaret's silver gown.
Evelyn studied the image.
"She isn't asking us to rescue her."
Daniel leaned closer.
"What is she doing?"
Evelyn enlarged the reflection.
Margaret was holding three fingers against the keypad.
Four.
Two.
May you like
Six.
"She's giving us the door code."
