Chapter 11 - The Ballroom Trap.

Adrian had expected the fire alarm.
He had expected the construction disguise.
He had even expected Daniel.
What he did not expect was that Nora had already activated the center's renovation cameras through the contractor's remote system.
Every corridor now had an independent record Adrian could not easily erase.
Evelyn did not know that yet.
She only knew the basement doors had locked and Adrian was speaking through the building.
"Bring Margaret to the main stage."
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
"He wants an audience."
Margaret shook her head.
"He wants the key."
"Same thing with Adrian."
They moved toward the theater because every other exit had sealed.
The main stage was dark except for one white spotlight.
Adrian stood beneath it in a fresh tuxedo jacket.
He had changed his shirt since the gala.
Of course he had.
Even in the middle of a crisis, Adrian needed the room to see him exactly as he chose.
Six security officers stood along the aisles.
No one raised a weapon.
Adrian preferred intimidation that could later be described as a misunderstanding.
"Margaret," he said.
"You made this unnecessarily difficult."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Your father said the same thing to Thomas."
Adrian's expression flickered.
Evelyn noticed.
"You never liked being compared to him."
Adrian ignored her.
"Give me the phrase."
Evelyn took the brass token from her pocket.
"You think this unlocks the account?"
"I know your father built the cipher."
"Then you know he hated obvious answers."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Enough games."
Evelyn held the token between two fingers.
"The phrase is 'You forgot the obvious.'"
For the first time, Adrian looked surprised.
He took out his phone and entered the words into an encrypted screen.
ACCESS DENIED.
He looked up sharply.
Evelyn remained still.
"I told you."
"Wrong key."
Adrian took one step toward her.
Daniel moved between them.
Security guards moved closer.
Evelyn raised her voice.
"Before anyone decides this is worth losing a career over, you should know this building is recording."
Several guards hesitated.
Adrian laughed once.
"The internal cameras are mine."
"Not the renovation system."
That was a guess.
Evelyn saw from Adrian's face that it was correct.
Nora's voice suddenly came through Daniel's earpiece.
"You're live."
Daniel whispered back.
"To whom?"
"Three attorneys, two journalists, and a federal investigator."
Evelyn looked directly at Adrian.
"You wanted an audience."
"Now you have one."
Adrian's composure cracked.
"You think a video changes anything?"
"No."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Evidence changes things."
Margaret removed a thin memory card from the hem of the silver gown she still wore beneath Evelyn's jacket.
Adrian went completely still.
Margaret held it up.
"Victor made me keep copies of every payment instruction."
"I kept them longer than he expected."
Adrian looked toward his security team.
"Take it."
No one moved.
He repeated the order.
"Take it."
One guard slowly removed his earpiece.
"Sir, if this is being recorded, I'm not touching anything."
Adrian stared at him with open disbelief.
The room had changed.
May you like
Not because Adrian had become weaker.
Because everyone else had finally realized they did not have to pretend he was stronger than the truth.
