Chapter 13 - The Last Account.

The final server was not in Vale Tower.
It was not in a bank vault.
It was not even registered to the Vale family.
Victor Vale had hidden it inside the Bellamy Grand, the same hotel where the gala had begun.
Thirty years earlier, he had financed the hotel's renovation and quietly retained control of a sealed communications room beneath the original ballroom.
Margaret knew because she had carried paper transfer codes there during Victor's final months.
By noon, federal investigators had secured the room under warrant.
Evelyn arrived with Nora and Margaret through a service entrance.
The chandeliers above were still being cleaned after the night's broken glass.
Employees whispered when they recognized Evelyn.
The edited gala video had already been replaced online by a guest's full phone recording.
It showed Adrian grabbing her shoulder first.
Public opinion was beginning to shift.
Evelyn did not care yet.
Her father had taught her that truth needed records, not applause.
The hidden server room smelled of cold metal and dust.
A single terminal waited behind two locked cabinets.
Investigators photographed everything before Evelyn touched it.
The screen requested an archive phrase.
She entered the sentence from childhood.
YOU FORGOT THE OBVIOUS.
The system accepted it.
A second prompt appeared.
IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Evelyn placed her hand on the scanner.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Denied.
Margaret looked confused.
"Victor said it was biometric."
Nora studied the prompt.
"Maybe not fingerprints."
Evelyn looked at the old microphone beside the terminal.
A memory returned.
Thomas never used fingerprints for family puzzles.
He hated the idea that identity could be reduced to something stolen from a surface.
He used voices.
Evelyn leaned toward the microphone.
"You forgot the obvious."
The screen changed.
WELCOME, EVELYN.
Everyone in the room went silent.
Folders appeared across the display.
Payments.
Contracts.
Judicial favors.
Shell charities.
Private correspondence.
And one folder named THOMAS MERCER - ORIGINAL.
Evelyn opened it.
A video file began playing.
Her father appeared on screen, older and more tired than she remembered him.
He had recorded it days before his arrest.
"If this archive is opened, then Victor found a way to destroy my name before I could expose him."
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Thomas continued.
"Evelyn, if you are the one watching, do not spend your life trying to make strangers believe I was good."
"I know who I am."
"I need you to know who you are."
Tears reached Evelyn's eyes, but she did not look away.
"Take the evidence to people who cannot bury it alone."
"Make copies."
"Make noise."
"And then live a life that has nothing to do with the Vale family."
The recording ended.
Nora rested a hand near Evelyn's arm without touching her.
An investigator approached the terminal.
"Ms. Hart, with your permission, we'd like to begin the forensic image."
Evelyn stepped aside.
"Take everything."
Then Margaret pointed at the screen.
A final account balance had appeared.
Three hundred ninety-eight million dollars.
Beside it was a transfer control.
Adrian had been right about the money.
But below the balance was another line.
BENEFICIARY: MERCER PUBLIC RESTITUTION TRUST.
Evelyn stared at it.
May you like
Her father had never intended the money for himself.
He had intended to return it.
