Chapter 4 - The Room Marked M.

Vale Tower rose above the financial district like a blade of black glass.
At nearly midnight, most office floors were dark, but the lower parking structure remained brightly lit.
Daniel entered through a service lane using credentials Nora had acquired months earlier.
Evelyn changed in the back seat, replacing her wet heels with flat shoes while keeping the black gown and jacket.
She refused to leave the dress behind.
It had become part of the disguise and part of the warning.
Anyone who saw her would assume she had come directly from the gala.
They would be right.
Daniel parked near an emergency stairwell.
"We have eight minutes before the copied access code expires."
Evelyn opened the door.
"Then don't waste one."
They descended two levels below the garage.
The air became cooler.
The concrete walls lost all corporate branding.
There were no signs, no cameras in visible corners, and no employees.
At the bottom of the stairwell stood a gray security door with a single black card reader.
Daniel held the copied badge to it.
Green light.
The lock released.
Beyond it was a narrow corridor ending at another door.
A brass letter M had been fixed to the center.
Evelyn approached slowly.
For twelve years, the name Mercer had existed only in sealed records, private memories, and Nora's case files.
Seeing its first letter on Adrian's hidden floor made her skin go cold.
She opened the door.
The room looked nothing like an archive.
It looked like a museum.
Rows of steel cabinets lined the walls.
Glass cases held old company seals, signed contracts, obsolete phones, and paper ledgers dating back decades.
At the center stood a long table covered with labeled folders.
Evelyn found MERCER immediately.
Her hands remained steady as she opened it.
Inside were photographs of her childhood home.
School records.
A copy of her mother's death certificate.
Her university application.
A photograph of Evelyn at age nineteen walking across campus.
Another at twenty-four leaving her first consulting job.
Another at twenty-eight entering the same conference where she first met Adrian.
Daniel stopped beside her.
"He knew."
Evelyn did not answer.
At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note in Adrian's unmistakable script.
KEEP HER CLOSE UNTIL THE MERCER KEY IS LOCATED.
Evelyn read it aloud.
"The Mercer key."
Daniel searched the nearby folders.
"Could mean an account key, encryption key, physical key."
Evelyn lifted the final photograph.
It showed her father standing beside a young Margaret Sloane in the basement of the old Mercer house.
Thomas was holding something small and metallic.
A key.
Evelyn's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Margaret's voice came through in a whisper.
"He'll know you're there now."
Evelyn turned toward the ceiling.
A tiny lens moved behind a dark ventilation screen.
They had missed the camera.
"Margaret, where are you?"
"Not safe."
"Why did you frame my father?"
Silence.
Then Margaret exhaled shakily.
"Because Adrian's father told me your mother would disappear next if I didn't."
Evelyn gripped the phone.
Before she could ask another question, every light in the room switched off.
A mechanical lock snapped shut behind them.
May you like
Daniel whispered one word.
"Run."
