Chapter 5 - The Guest in Silver.

Emergency lights flickered on at floor level, turning the archive into a corridor of red shadows.

Daniel pulled the door handle.

Locked.

Evelyn scanned the room, forcing herself to ignore the photographs of her own life surrounding her.

"There has to be another exit."

She remembered the service passage at the gala.

Adrian liked hidden routes because visible doors created witnesses.

She moved behind the steel cabinets, looking for air flow, hinges, anything that did not belong.

A thin draft touched her scratched shoulder.

"Here."

Daniel helped her shift a narrow display case.

Behind it was a maintenance panel.

The screws had been removed recently.

Margaret had prepared this.

They slipped into a utility tunnel just as voices entered the archive through the main door.

Evelyn recognized Adrian immediately.

"Search every cabinet."

His tone was calm again.

That was always when he was most dangerous.

Daniel crawled ahead through the narrow passage.

Evelyn followed until the tunnel opened into a service elevator shaft access room.

A phone lay on the floor beneath a folded silver scarf.

Margaret's scarf.

Evelyn picked up the phone.

One message filled the screen.

PLAY RECORDING 4.

She pressed it.

Margaret's recorded voice began.

"If Evelyn Hart hears this, then I failed to reach her in person."

Evelyn sat on the concrete step.

"Thomas Mercer did not steal from Vale Development."

"He discovered that Victor Vale was moving public redevelopment money through charitable accounts."

Victor was Adrian's father, dead for six years and still praised across the city as a visionary philanthropist.

Margaret continued.

"Thomas copied the transaction map and encrypted it."

"Victor believed the key was hidden with Evelyn because Thomas refused to give it up."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Her father had never mentioned a key.

"I was forced to testify against him."

"I told myself I was protecting my family."

"I have hated myself every day since."

The recording paused.

Then Margaret said something stranger.

"Adrian does not want the key to protect his father."

"He wants it because he cannot open the final account without it."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Final account?"

The recording continued.

"Victor hid money from everyone, including Adrian."

"The Mercer archive can expose the old crimes, but the key can also unlock nearly four hundred million dollars."

Evelyn stared at the phone.

Adrian had not kept her close out of revenge.

He had kept her close because he believed she was worth four hundred million dollars.

Footsteps sounded above the shaft room.

Daniel killed the phone's screen.

The service door opened.

A beam of white light swept across the floor.

Evelyn and Daniel pressed themselves behind a maintenance cabinet.

Two guards entered.

One spoke into a radio.

"Nothing here."

The other looked at the silver scarf on the floor.

"She was here."

A new voice came through the radio.

Adrian's voice.

"Then find Margaret before Evelyn does."

The guards left.

Evelyn waited until the footsteps faded.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"We find Margaret first."

Daniel nodded.

"And after that?"

May you like

Evelyn picked up the scarf.

"I find the key."
