Chapter 12: The Shadows of the Past
Even though Eleanor had explained why she faked her death, Victoria couldn’t completely relax. She kept worrying that the people who had threatened her mother years ago might still be out there.
She hired a private investigator to look into her father’s old debts and connections. After several weeks, the investigator came back with good news: the main people who had been after her father were either dead or in prison. There was no active threat anymore.
When Victoria told Eleanor, her mother let out a long breath of relief.
“I’ve been looking over my shoulder for years,” Eleanor admitted. “It feels strange to finally feel safe.”
Victoria reached across the table and took her mother’s hand.
“You don’t have to look over your shoulder anymore. We’re together now. And we’re going to protect each other.”
