Chapter 9: The Family They Were Meant to Be

Months passed, and slowly, a new kind of normal settled in.
Victoria officially adopted Lily, though in her heart, she had never stopped being her mother. Eleanor moved into a small cottage nearby so she could be close to her granddaughter without interfering too much. She and Victoria were rebuilding their relationship carefully, one conversation at a time.
Alexander proved to be an incredible stepfather. He was patient with Lily’s occasional nightmares and never tried to replace anyone. He simply showed up every day with love and consistency.
One weekend, they all went on a small trip to the beach — Victoria, Alexander, Lily, and Eleanor. It was the first time they had done something as a complete family.
Lily ran ahead on the sand, laughing as the waves chased her feet. Eleanor watched her with a soft smile. Alexander walked beside Victoria, holding her hand.
“I never thought I would have this,” Victoria said quietly.
Alexander squeezed her hand.
“You do now.”
That night, after Lily had fallen asleep in the hotel room, Victoria stood on the balcony with her mother.
“Do you think she’ll be okay?” Eleanor asked, watching her granddaughter sleep through the open door.

Victoria smiled.
“She already is. She has all of us now. That’s more than enough.”
