Chapter 15: The Life They Built

Three years after that chaotic wedding day, Victoria stood in the kitchen of their home, watching her family through the window.
Alexander was outside helping Lily with her bike while Eleanor sat on the porch, sipping tea and laughing at something Lily had said. The sound of their laughter drifted in through the open window.
Victoria smiled to herself.
So much had changed since the day she snatched that locket from Lily’s neck. She had gone from living a life built on lies and fear to one filled with honesty and love.
She still had moments of guilt about the years she missed with Lily. But she had learned to forgive herself. She had been young and scared, and she had done the best she could with the information she had at the time.
More importantly, she had learned that it was never too late to choose truth over comfort.
Alexander walked into the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked.
Victoria leaned back against him.
“Just how lucky I am,” she said softly. “I almost lost everything because I was too afraid to tell the truth. But now…”
She looked out at her daughter and her mother laughing together.
“Now I have everything I ever wanted.”
Alexander kissed the side of her head.
“We all do.”
Outside, Lily called for them to come watch her ride her bike without training wheels. Victoria and Alexander stepped out onto the porch, hand in hand, ready to cheer her on.
The life they had now wasn’t perfect.
