Chapter 7: The Mother Who Had No Choice

Later that night, Victoria sat down with her mother in a quiet corner of the venue.

Eleanor looked older than Victoria remembered. There were more lines on her face, and her hands trembled slightly as she held a cup of tea.

“I never wanted to leave you,” Eleanor said softly. “But after your father died, I started receiving threats. People he owed money to. Dangerous people. When they found out about Lily, they made it clear they would use her against me.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I had already lost your father. I couldn’t lose you too. So I made the hardest decision of my life. I disappeared with Lily and let everyone believe I was dead. I changed our names. We moved constantly. I did everything I could to keep her safe.”

Victoria felt tears stinging her eyes.

“Why didn’t you ever contact me? Even once?”

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“I wanted to. So many times. But I was terrified that if I reached out, they would find us. And I knew if you found out Lily was alive, you would try to find her. I couldn’t risk that.”

She reached across the table and took Victoria’s hand.

“I’m so sorry, my darling. I thought I was protecting you. But I see now that I only caused more pain.”

Victoria squeezed her mother’s hand.

“I’m angry,” she admitted. “But I also understand why you did it. And I’m glad you’re alive. I thought I had lost you forever.”
