Chapter 11 - The Witness Against Sophia.
Rachel's testimony was polished, detailed, and almost entirely misleading.
Sophia had been dismissed from a previous home, but not for chasing wealth.
She had reported unsafe working conditions and refused to falsify a care log.
The family paid Rachel to persuade Sophia to remain silent.
Rachel accepted the money.
Sophia had not spoken to her since.
Grant presented the old dismissal as proof that Sophia created conflict wherever she worked.
Maya asked Rachel when Grant first contacted her.
Rachel said two weeks earlier.
That was before Leo's feeding crisis and before Bianca claimed she had any concern about Sophia.
The timing exposed preparation.
Maya then produced bank records showing a payment from Grant's consulting company to Rachel.
Rachel called it a research fee.
The judge asked what research she had performed.
Rachel could not answer.
Sophia listened as the woman who had once raised her traded family memories for credibility.
The betrayal hurt, but it no longer controlled her.
When Sophia took the stand, she did not claim to be perfect.
She explained the feeding changes, the warm bottle, Elena's blanket, and the quiet room.
She described Leo's response without dramatizing it.
Grant asked whether she had told Julian that Leo was going to survive.
"I told a frightened father that his son was trying," Sophia said.
"You made a medical promise." "I gave reassurance while following the doctor's plan." Dr.
Hart confirmed that Sophia's method had been safe and effective.
The court supervisor confirmed that Leo fed reliably in Sophia's presence and later with Julian using the same routine.
Grant suggested that dependence on a nanny proved Julian's weakness.
Dr.
Hart disagreed.
"Good parents learn from people with useful knowledge." Julian testified next.
He admitted he had cried, lost sleep, and feared entering the nursery.
He also described learning every part of Leo's care.
"Grief made me slow," he said.
"It did not make me absent." The judge watched Elena's video in complete silence.
Grant objected repeatedly and was overruled.
Bianca's attorney requested a recess.
During the break, Rachel approached Sophia in the corridor and quietly apologized.
Sophia did not accept the apology.
"Tell the truth when court resumes," she said.
Rachel returned to the stand and admitted Grant had scripted portions of her statement.
Grant's confidence finally cracked.
He asked to withdraw from the courtroom.
The judge ordered him to remain available.
Just before the decision, a bailiff delivered new information.
Leo had developed a mild fever at the supervised nursery and was being taken for evaluation.
Julian stood immediately.
Grant smiled as if leaving would prove instability.
The judge looked directly at Julian.
"Mr.
Rossi, where do you believe you should be?" Julian answered without hesitation.
