Chapter 3 - The Missing Hour.
Julian ordered the mansion doors closed until the electronic records could be reviewed.
Bianca called the decision irrational and added it to her attorney's notes.
Sophia focused on Leo because caring for him was the only action no one could turn into an argument.
At ten, Dr.
Evelyn Hart arrived and examined the baby in the nursery.
She confirmed that Leo was hydrated, alert, and responding well to smaller warm feedings.
"Who adjusted the routine?" she asked.
Sophia raised her hand.
Dr.
Hart praised the observation and wrote it in her report.
Bianca immediately asked whether a nanny had authority to make that choice.
"She used the approved formula and a safe method," Dr.
Hart answered.
"She also got a positive result." For the first time, Bianca had no quick reply.
Julian asked the doctor about the missing bottle.
Dr.
Hart's expression became serious.
She said any unusual sample should have been preserved and offered to order an independent review of the remaining supplies.
Celeste announced that every opened container had already been discarded for hygiene.
Sophia stared at her.
"I sealed them this morning." "And I followed household procedure," Celeste said.
Julian demanded the security logs.
The technician discovered exactly sixty minutes missing from the nursery corridor archive.
The missing hour began two minutes before Sophia prepared the first successful bottle.
It ended just after the dismissal letter appeared.
Grant suggested the outage might support Bianca's claim that the household was poorly managed.
Sophia realized every new discovery somehow became evidence against Julian.
She asked to see the physical camera hub.
Celeste refused.
Julian overruled her.
Inside the locked utility cabinet, the technician found that the recorder had not failed.
Someone had removed a storage drive.
Celeste produced a key ring and insisted only Julian and she had access.
Julian's key had remained in his desk.
Celeste's key had supposedly stayed on her belt.
Bianca pointed toward Sophia's uniform pocket.
"Search her." The accusation landed with humiliating force.
Sophia emptied her pockets onto the nursery table.
A handkerchief, a hair tie, a feeding timer, and a small brass key fell onto the wood.
She had never seen the key before.
Celeste held it up.
"Utility cabinet." Julian looked at Sophia, and for one terrible moment she saw doubt.
"I didn't put that there," she said.
Bianca told Grant to call building security.
Sophia's eyes burned, but she refused to cry in front of them.
She had spent the night helping a frightened father and a fragile newborn.
Now she stood accused by people who treated kindness as a weakness to exploit.
Leo began to fuss in the crib.
Sophia moved toward him, but Celeste blocked her path.
"You are no longer authorized to touch the child." Julian's hesitation ended.
He took the key from Celeste and placed it on the table.
"Until there is proof, Sophia remains Leo's nanny." Bianca warned that his decision would be quoted at the hearing.
"Quote this too," Julian said.
"The only person who helped my son last night will not be removed because a key appeared in her pocket." Security arrived and photographed the evidence.
As an officer lifted the key, Sophia noticed a thread caught in its teeth.
The thread was not black from her uniform.
It was pale blue, the exact color of Celeste's cuff.
