Chapter 1 - The Fall in the Blue Hallway.

Olivia Hart had learned how to move quietly through the Vale residence, even when every polished surface seemed designed to announce a person's presence.

The dark blue wall panels reflected the warm brass lights, and the marble floor carried every footstep farther than it should have.

On most evenings, Olivia crossed that hallway with a tablet tucked under one arm and a calm expression that made everyone believe she had everything under control.

That evening, she was carrying only a thin medical folder and the weight of three nights without proper sleep.

She had almost reached the turn near the library when the floor seemed to tilt beneath her.

Her fingers reached for the wall and found nothing.

The folder slipped from her hand.

A second later, her knees gave way.

Adrian Vale had been walking toward the front staircase with his overcoat draped over his shoulders, already late for the largest board meeting of the quarter.

He saw Olivia sway before anyone else did.

He dropped the leather case in his hand and crossed the space between them in two fast steps.

He caught her beneath the shoulders before her head could meet the marble.

"Olivia, keep your eyes open."

Her lashes fluttered.

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

His voice was low, controlled, and impossible to mistake for a suggestion.

Marcus Reed, Adrian's chief assistant, stopped several yards away and immediately signaled for the hallway staff to give them space.

Adrian lowered Olivia carefully against the wall and knelt beside her.

She tried to push herself upright, but her arm trembled under her weight.

"I just stood up too fast."

"You were walking."

Olivia looked away.

Adrian reached for her elbow only to steady her, but her short sleeve shifted.

Three dark purple marks curved across her upper left arm.

They were too distinct to be dismissed as an accidental bump into furniture.

Olivia saw where he was looking and pulled the sleeve down so quickly that the motion made her wince.

Something changed in Adrian's face.

The concern remained, but it became sharper.

"Who did that?"

"Please don't ask."

Her voice was not defensive.

It was frightened.

That frightened him more than the marks.

A phone began vibrating inside Olivia's scrub pocket.

She froze.

Adrian noticed that too.

"Do you want me to get it?"

"No."

The answer came so quickly that Marcus looked up.

The phone stopped.

Then it started again.

Olivia's breathing became shallow.

"Please, just let it ring."

Adrian leaned closer without crowding her.

"Olivia, look at me."

She forced herself to meet his eyes.

"You are in my house, surrounded by people who work for me, and you are still terrified of that phone."

Tears gathered along her lower lashes.

"Someone I can't escape."

Footsteps approached from the far end of the corridor.

A junior aide appeared with a tablet held tightly against his chest.

"Mr. Vale, the board is waiting in the east conference room."

Adrian never looked away from Olivia.

"Cancel it."

The aide blinked.

"Sir, the Mercer acquisition team flew in from Chicago."

"Then they can fly back."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Adrian, that meeting has been scheduled for six weeks."

"And she nearly collapsed in front of me."

Marcus glanced at Olivia, then at the dark marks she was trying to cover.

His expression changed immediately.

"Understood."

Adrian took out his phone and handed it to Marcus.

"Get Dr. Bell here quietly."

"Done."

"And Marcus?"

Marcus paused.

"Find out who she's afraid of."

Olivia grabbed Adrian's wrist.

For the first time, there was real panic in her face.

"No."

Adrian looked down at her hand.

"Why?"

"Because if you start looking, he'll know."

The hallway seemed suddenly too quiet.

Adrian's gaze moved toward the security camera above the archway.

A tiny red indicator light blinked once.

Then it went dark.

Marcus saw it too.

No one spoke for a full second.

Adrian slowly turned his head toward his assistant.

"That camera was working five minutes ago."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I'll check the system."

Olivia's grip on Adrian's wrist became stronger.

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

She swallowed hard.

"He's not outside this house."

Adrian's expression went still.

"What does that mean?"

Olivia looked toward the end of the blue-paneled corridor, where the elevator doors were beginning to open.

"It means someone here has been helping him."

Dr. Evelyn Bell arrived through the service entrance twelve minutes later, carrying a small black medical bag and asking no questions in the hallway.

Adrian had moved Olivia into a private sitting room beside the library, where the curtains could be closed and the door could be guarded without attracting attention.

Marcus stood outside with two trusted security officers while Adrian remained near the fireplace.

Dr. Bell checked Olivia's blood pressure, pulse, and pupils before giving her water and insisting she sit still.

"You are exhausted, dehydrated, and under serious stress."

Olivia stared at the glass in her hands.

"I know."

"Knowing is not the same as fixing it."

Dr. Bell glanced at Adrian before lowering her voice.

"The marks on your arm are recent."

Olivia said nothing.

Adrian's jaw tightened, but he did not interrupt.

Dr. Bell placed a business card on the table.

"If you want medical documentation, I can do that privately."

Olivia looked at the card as if it were something dangerous.

"No records."

"Why?"

"Because records can be found."

That sentence changed the atmosphere of the room.

Adrian stepped away from the fireplace.

"By whom?"

Olivia looked at the closed door.

"I said too much already."

Her phone began vibrating again on the coffee table.

The screen showed PRIVATE CALLER.

Olivia turned pale.

Adrian did not touch it.

"How often does that happen?"

"Whenever I ignore him."

"Him who?"

She pressed both palms together.

"Please don't make me say his name here."

Adrian stared at the phone until it stopped.

Then it buzzed with a text message.

No sender name appeared.

Only five words were visible on the lock screen.

YOU MISSED YOUR CHECK-IN.

Olivia reached for the phone, but Adrian gently stopped her hand.

"Is this person tracking you?"

"Sometimes."

"Through the phone?"

"Not only the phone."

Marcus knocked once and entered.

His face had the controlled look Adrian recognized from every serious security problem they had handled together.

"The hallway camera didn't fail."

Adrian turned.

"It was disabled."

"For exactly eight minutes."

Olivia closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

"The command came from an internal administrative credential."

"Whose?"

"That's the problem."

May you like

Marcus held up his tablet.

"The credential belongs to an account that should have been deleted three years ago."
