Chapter 6 - The File With Olivia's Name.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written three words.
SHE TRIED TOO.
Olivia's hands began to shake.
A drawer behind her clicked open by itself.
She turned sharply.
It had not opened electronically.
A simple spring latch had released after the door shifted.
Inside was a stack of copied invoices and a small cassette recorder.
Olivia almost laughed from nerves.
It looked like something from another century.
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then her mother's voice came through the tiny speaker.
"If Olivia ever hears this, then the plan failed."
Olivia stopped breathing.
Elise continued.
"Anna, if you are listening with her, I'm sorry."
Olivia sat down hard in the chair.
"I found proof that Victor Hale has been protecting Meridian's off-book practices."
The recording crackled.
"Grant Mercer was not acting alone."
Olivia pressed both hands over her mouth.
"Elias believes he can expose it from inside Vale Capital, but Victor controls too many of the compliance records."
A pause followed.
"Anna thinks the safest choice is to move Olivia somewhere Victor cannot use her against me."
Olivia whispered, "Mom."
The recording continued.
"I won't let them make my daughter afraid of her own life."
Footsteps sounded in the corridor.
Olivia shut off the recorder.
She looked for another exit.
There was none.
The door opened.
Adrian stood there, breathless and furious.
Marcus was behind him.
Olivia had never been so relieved to see anyone.
Adrian crossed the room.
"What were you thinking?"
"I got a message."
"And you followed it into a sealed basement?"
"It mentioned my mother."
"That does not make it safe."
"I know."
He stopped.
Her eyes were full of tears.
His anger softened immediately.
"What did you find?"
Olivia held up the recorder.
They listened to the message from the beginning.
Marcus leaned against the doorframe when Victor's name was spoken.
Adrian stared at the photograph of their mothers.
"They knew each other."
"More than that."
Olivia pointed to the documents.
"They were working together."
Rachel arrived several minutes later and began photographing every page before anything was moved.
The invoices showed Meridian payments routed through consulting firms connected to Vale vendors.
Most were small enough to escape high-level review.
Together they represented millions of dollars over several years.
Adrian's attention remained on the cassette recorder.
"Who sent you here?"
Olivia showed him the message from A.
Marcus checked the device.
"No sender trace yet."
Rachel looked at Adrian.
"A could mean Anna."
"My mother has been gone five years."
"The message could have been scheduled or forwarded."
Olivia shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"The person who sent it knew I was in the house today."
That was true.
The mystery grew darker, not clearer.
Marcus searched Room 14 and found an old access panel behind the cabinet.
Recent fingerprints marked the dust.
Someone had been there within days.
Then Rachel found a fresh paper coffee cup in a trash bin.
The receipt taped to it was dated that morning.
Someone had been waiting for Olivia to reach the room.
Adrian checked the corridor.
"Seal every exit."
Marcus was already moving.
Olivia looked again at the photograph.
Near the bottom corner, almost hidden beneath the tape, another person appeared in the background.
A younger Victor Hale stood beside the ballroom doors.
And next to him was a woman Olivia recognized instantly.
Dr. Evelyn Bell.
For several seconds, Olivia could not reconcile the woman in the old photograph with the doctor who had calmly checked her pulse the night before.
Dr. Evelyn Bell had seemed kind, careful, and almost deliberately neutral.
Yet the picture placed her beside Victor Hale nearly two decades earlier, at the same event where Elise Hart and Anna Vale had been photographed together.
Adrian enlarged the image on Marcus's tablet.
"Evelyn was my mother's physician for years."
Rachel looked at him.
"Did she work for Meridian?"
"Not that I know of."
Olivia remembered Dr. Bell placing a private documentation card on the table.
She remembered the doctor's expression when Olivia had refused records.
At the time, it had looked like concern.
Now Olivia was no longer sure.
Marcus called Dr. Bell immediately.
She answered on the fourth ring.
"Marcus?"
"Where are you?"
A pause.
"At my clinic."
"Stay there."
Another pause.
"You found the photograph."
Marcus's face hardened.
"How do you know about the photograph?"
Dr. Bell exhaled slowly.
"Because I took it."
Adrian took the phone.
"Evelyn, tell me what is happening."
"Not on this line."
"Then give me a line you trust."
"There isn't one."
The call ended.
Marcus was already ordering an outside team to the clinic.
Olivia looked at Adrian.
"She knew my mother."
"Apparently."
"And she never told me."
"Maybe she couldn't."
Olivia's anger finally surfaced.
"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."
Her voice echoed down the concrete hallway.
"My mother disappeared, lawyers lied, employers watched me, and now people who knew the truth have been standing in front of me pretending we're strangers."
Adrian did not defend Dr. Bell.
"You're right."
The simple answer stopped Olivia.
"You don't have to excuse any of it."
Rachel gathered the copied records.
"We need to move."
They returned upstairs, but Dr. Bell arrived before the outside team reached her clinic.
She entered the library carrying the same black medical bag.
Marcus blocked the door.
"Phone on the table."
She complied.
"Keys too."
She placed them beside it.
Adrian stood near the window.
"Start talking."
Dr. Bell looked at Olivia first.
"Your mother saved my career."
Olivia said nothing.
"I was a junior physician at a Meridian-contracted facility."
Dr. Bell folded her hands.
"Staff were being pushed into impossible schedules, and complaints were disappearing."
"My mother found out."
"Yes."
"And Anna Vale?"
"She helped your mother get documents to Elias."
Adrian's expression tightened.
"Why did my father stop?"
"He didn't."
Dr. Bell looked directly at him.
"Victor made it look like he did."
She explained that Elias had created two investigation teams.
One was official and visible.
Victor shut that one down.
The second was hidden and known only to Elias, Anna, Elise, and Dr. Bell.
Its purpose was to preserve evidence long enough to bring in independent investigators.
Before that could happen, Elise received a warning that Olivia was being watched.
Anna arranged for Elise to leave the state temporarily.
Olivia leaned forward.
"Temporarily?"
Dr. Bell's eyes filled with regret.
"That was the plan."
"What happened?"
"Victor discovered she had left."
"And?"
"After that, contact stopped."
May you like
Olivia's face went white.
"You don't know where she went."
