Chapter 7 - The Wrong Protector.

"No."
"You let me believe she abandoned me."
"I was told that contacting you would put you at greater risk."
Olivia stood.
"By whom?"
Dr. Bell looked at Adrian.
"Elias."
Adrian absorbed the blow in silence.
Dr. Bell reached into her bag slowly.
Marcus tensed.
She removed a sealed envelope.
"This was given to me by Anna Vale five years ago."
The front bore Adrian's name.
"She told me to give it to you only if Victor moved against the company again."
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter from his mother.
He read silently until his face changed.
Olivia could not wait.
"What does it say?"
Adrian handed her the final page.
Anna had written one sentence in heavy ink.
VICTOR IS NOT THE ONLY PERSON YOU MUST FEAR.
Below it was another name.
MARCUS REED.
The room went silent.
Marcus stared at the page.
"That's impossible."
Dr. Bell looked at him with something close to pity.
"Your father wasn't always Marcus Reed."
Marcus's face drained of color.
"What did you say?"
Dr. Bell continued.
"Ask him what his family name was before he was adopted."
Adrian turned slowly toward the man he had trusted for eleven years.
Marcus did not answer.
That silence was answer enough.
Marcus stood in the center of the library while every person in the room waited for him to speak.
He had spent years building a reputation around control.
He was the one who remembered exits, checked windows, noticed unfamiliar cars, and solved problems before Adrian knew they existed.
Now he looked like a man who had reached the end of a road he never intended anyone else to see.
"My birth name was Mercer."
Olivia's breath caught.
Adrian's voice was almost too quiet.
"What relation are you to Grant?"
"Half-brother."
Rachel immediately stepped closer to the door.
Marcus noticed.
"I'm not working with him."
"You might understand why that's difficult to accept right now," Adrian said.
Marcus nodded once.
"Yes."
He removed his jacket and placed it over a chair, then held both hands where everyone could see them.
"My mother married Grant's father when I was six."
He looked at Olivia.
"Grant was twelve years older than me."
Marcus explained that the Mercer home had been built around obedience, image, and silence.
Grant learned early that information gave him power.
Marcus learned early that distance gave him peace.
At nineteen, Marcus left, joined the military, and later took his adoptive mother's surname.
He had not spoken to Grant in more than fifteen years.
Adrian stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because he was irrelevant to my life."
"Until I tried to buy his company."
Marcus looked down.
"I should have told you when the Meridian proposal arrived."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I thought you'd remove me from the deal."
"I would have."
"Exactly."
Adrian's anger finally showed.
"You let me walk into negotiations with your brother and never said a word."
"Half-brother."
"That distinction does not help you right now."
Olivia interrupted.
"Did Grant know you worked for Adrian?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Yes."
"Since when?"
"Probably from the beginning."
She looked toward the falsified security records.
"Then framing you was easy."
Marcus nodded.
"He knew enough details to make it believable."
Dr. Bell pointed to Anna's letter.
"Anna did not say Marcus was guilty."
Adrian reread the line.
Victor is not the only person you must fear.
Marcus Reed.
The punctuation was ambiguous.
Rachel noticed it too.
"Maybe this isn't a warning about Marcus."
Olivia looked at her.
"What else could it mean?"
Rachel asked for the original envelope.
On the back, beneath the flap, Anna had written a second note in smaller handwriting.
IF MARCUS IS STILL WITH ADRIAN, TELL HIM HIS BROTHER KNOWS.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Adrian looked at him.
"Knows what?"
Marcus did not answer immediately.
Then he sat down.
"When I was twenty, Grant came to me after our father died."
His voice had lost its professional distance.
"He wanted access to a storage unit our father kept under my name."
"What was in it?"
"Company records."
Olivia leaned forward.
"Meridian records?"
"Meridian did not exist yet."
Marcus looked at her.
"But the staffing network that became Meridian did."
He explained that his father had kept duplicate payroll books, property contracts, and consulting invoices.
Marcus refused to give them to Grant.
Instead, he sent the boxes anonymously to a corporate attorney.
That attorney had been Anna Vale.
Adrian stared at him.
"My mother was an attorney before she married my father."
Marcus nodded.
"I didn't know she was your mother at the time."
"And she never told me."
"Apparently she decided the safest thing was to keep us separate."
Olivia's eyes widened.
"Then A.H. in Elias's note might not mean a person."
Rachel looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"Anna handled something."
She picked up the old memorandum.
"A.H. could mean Anna Holds."
Marcus gave a small shake of his head.
"Or Archive H."
Adrian looked toward the shelves.
His mother had labeled storage by letters.
Archive H had been one of her private legal collections.
"Where is Archive H now?"
Rachel checked the estate inventory.
Her face changed.
"Transferred after Anna's death."
"To where?"
"Vale Capital downtown."
"Which storage room?"
Rachel looked up.
"The executive boardroom level."
Everyone understood at once.
Victor had called an emergency board meeting for noon on the same floor where Archive H was stored.
Marcus checked the time.
11:18 a.m.
Adrian reached for his coat.
"We're going."
Olivia stood too.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"You said we do this your way."
"My way does not include walking you into a room with Grant Mercer."
Olivia met his gaze.
"Then your way won't get the truth."
Before Adrian could respond, Rachel's phone rang.
The caller was building security at Vale Capital.
Archive H had been accessed ten minutes earlier.
The person who signed it out used Adrian Vale's executive authorization.
Adrian had been in the library all morning.
Marcus looked at him.
"They're not just stealing evidence now."
Adrian picked up the counterfeit authorization image on Rachel's phone.
"They're making it look like I destroyed it."
By the time Adrian reached Vale Capital headquarters, the emergency board meeting had already begun.
Victor Hale sat at the center of the long glass table with Grant Mercer two seats away.
Grant looked exactly as Olivia remembered him.
Perfect suit.
Perfect posture.
Perfect expression of concern.

He was a man who understood how to make control look like professionalism.
Olivia watched the meeting from a secure conference room one floor below with Rachel and Dr. Bell.
