Chapter 9 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much.

Olivia forced herself to remain still.
"Then explain it."
"She mistook normal business pressure for a moral crisis."
"People were afraid."
"People are always afraid of losing jobs."
"You made sure of it."
Grant shrugged.
"I made sure people honored contracts."
Olivia's voice remained steady.
"And Victor protected you."
Grant smiled again.
"Victor protects value."
That sentence was enough to make Rachel glance at the recording indicator.
Grant stepped closer.
"You can still walk away."
"How?"
"I clear every debt attached to your old training contract."
"You already told me that debt followed me forever."
"I can make it disappear."
"And in return?"
"You tell Adrian you exaggerated."
Olivia almost smiled.
"That's your plan?"
"It's the cleanest plan."
"What happens to the notebook?"
"It becomes irrelevant."
"And my mother?"
Grant's expression changed.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.
Olivia saw it.
"You know where she is."
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to."
Grant looked toward the service exit.
He had realized he had said too much.
Olivia took one slow step forward.
"Is she alive?"
Grant's jaw tightened.
"You should ask Dr. Bell."
Olivia froze.
"She says she lost contact."
"Then Evelyn is still lying."
Before Olivia could answer, the loading bay door began to rise.
Grant turned.
A second black vehicle waited outside.
Daniel Cross sat in the driver's seat.
But Daniel was supposed to be with outside counsel at Union Station.
Marcus swore.
"That's not Daniel."
Adrian looked through the narrow security window.
The driver wore Daniel's jacket and cap, but the face was wrong.
Another impersonation.
Grant moved toward the car.
Olivia called after him.
"You forgot something."
He turned.
She held up her phone.
"You just admitted Victor protected you."
Grant's face went flat.
"You think a recording saves you?"
Olivia met his eyes.
"No."
The side doors opened behind him.
Marcus and the outside security team stepped into view.
"But it helps."
Grant did not run.
He simply looked at Marcus and gave a small, bitter smile.
"Little brother."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Don't call me that."
Grant raised the notebook.
"Take one more step and this story gets much harder to prove."
Then every light in the loading level went out.
When emergency power returned, Grant was gone.
The notebook lay open on the concrete.
One page had been torn out.
The missing page became more important than the entire notebook the moment Olivia saw the numbering.
Elise had written dates in the upper right corner of every sheet.
The torn page had been positioned between two entries from the week before she disappeared.
Rachel photographed the binding and the torn edge.
"Whatever was on that page, Grant wanted it more than the notebook itself."
Olivia ran her thumb near the paper without touching it.
"My mother pressed hard when she wrote."
Marcus looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"There may be an impression on the next page."
Rachel immediately called a document examiner.
Adrian stayed beside Olivia while the others worked.
He had not spoken to her since the loading level.
She could feel his anger even though his voice remained calm.
"You are furious."
"Yes."
"At me?"
"Partly."
She looked at him.
"I told Rachel not to tell you until the plan was already moving."
"I know."
"Because you would have stopped it."
"Correct."
"Then I was right."
Adrian looked at her for a long moment.
"That is not how being right works."
Despite everything, Olivia gave a small laugh.
The sound surprised both of them.
Adrian's expression softened.
"I don't want you protected because I think you're weak."
Her smile disappeared.
"Then why?"
"Because you've spent years thinking you have to face every threat alone before anyone will believe you."
Olivia looked toward the notebook.
"Usually that's how it feels."
"Not here."
She wanted to believe him.
That was what frightened her most.
The document examiner arrived and used angled light to study the page beneath the missing sheet.
Faint impressions appeared.
A name emerged first.
EVELYN BELL.
Olivia looked toward Dr. Bell, who had been brought to headquarters under Rachel's supervision.
Dr. Bell closed her eyes.
"I knew this was coming."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"Then explain it before someone else does."
The examiner revealed more words.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
ANNA HAS LOCATION.
EVELYN HAS SECOND KEY.
Olivia stared at Dr. Bell.
"Second key to what?"
Dr. Bell sat down slowly.
"A safe deposit box."
"Where?"
"Boston."
"What's inside?"
"Your mother's original evidence."
Rachel looked stunned.
"You told us Room 14 held the preserved records."
"It held copies."
"Why lie?"
Dr. Bell looked at Olivia.
"Because Grant still had people inside the company."
"And you thought lying to me was safer."
"I thought ignorance kept you alive and free."
Olivia's voice sharpened.
"It did neither."
Dr. Bell accepted the rebuke.
"You're right."
She reached into her handbag and removed a small brass key.
"This is the second key."
Marcus took it carefully.
"Where is the first?"
"Anna had it."
Adrian thought of the missing blue photograph box from his mother's writing room.
"The key may have been in that box."
Rachel checked her notes.
"Then whoever stole the box may be headed to Boston."
Adrian turned to Marcus.
"Can we freeze access to the box?"
"If we know the bank."
Dr. Bell named a private bank on Beacon Street.
Marcus made the call.
The bank confirmed a box registered to a dormant legal trust created by Anna Vale.
Access required two physical keys and identity verification through the trust attorney.
Rachel asked the obvious question.
"Who is the trust attorney now?"
Dr. Bell looked uncomfortable.
"Victor Hale."
Adrian stared at her.
"My mother named Victor?"
"No."
Dr. Bell shook her head.
"He inherited control after the original attorney retired."
Marcus was already contacting the bank to block any withdrawal.
The bank officer placed him on hold.
Two minutes later, Marcus's face changed.
"We're too late."
Olivia stood.
"What happened?"
"Someone accessed the box forty minutes ago."
"Who?"
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"Victor Hale."
Rachel's phone rang at the same moment.
It was the outside audit team.
Victor had left the board meeting through a private elevator and disappeared from the building.
Adrian looked toward the city windows.
"He went to Boston?"
Marcus shook his head.
"Not physically."
"Then how did he open the box?"
Marcus listened to the bank officer again.
His expression darkened.
"He used a video authorization from the trust attorney account and sent a representative with both keys."
Olivia asked, "Who was the representative?"
May you like
Marcus swallowed.
"The bank logged her name as Elise Hart."
