Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Trap.

She wrote that Anna Vale had arranged legal protection and safe housing.
She wrote that she hated every day of silence.
The next letter was dated five years later.
It said Elias had died before completing the investigation and Anna was seriously ill.
Victor's network had grown stronger.
The third letter was recent.
Olivia read it aloud.
"If I disappear from this house, it means someone finally found me."
Adrian's expression sharpened.
"When was that written?"
"Seven weeks ago."
Marcus entered from the back room holding a small digital recorder.
"You need to hear this."
The final recording was dated six weeks earlier, matching Claire's last visit.
Elise's voice was older than Olivia remembered but unmistakable.
"Claire, if you are hearing this, don't come back."
A long pause followed.
"Victor knows about Maine."
Olivia gripped the chair.
"He found her."
Elise continued.
"I am leaving before his people arrive."
Another pause.
"I have the final ledger page."
Marcus looked at Olivia.
The missing page.
"I removed it years ago before hiding the notebook."
Olivia stared at the recorder.
Grant had torn out an empty replacement page.
The real page had never been in the notebook.
Elise went on.
"That page proves Victor personally authorized the first payments that built Mercer's control network."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Where did she take it?"
The recording answered.
"There is only one person left I trust to finish this."
Then the recording ended.
No name.
No destination.
Marcus searched the house while Olivia read more letters.
One sentence appeared repeatedly in different years.
I AM WAITING FOR THE DAY YOU CAN KNOW EVERYTHING WITHOUT BECOMING A TARGET.
Olivia sat by the window overlooking the water.
Adrian remained several feet away, giving her space.
"I spent half my life angry at her."
"You were given a story designed to make you angry."
"What if she still chose the wrong thing?"
"Then you can tell her that when you find her."
Olivia looked at him.
"You really think she's alive."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because six weeks ago she knew Victor found her and she left before he arrived."
He pointed to the untouched room.
"There is no sign she was forced out."
Marcus returned carrying an old address book.
"I found one recent number written in the back."
The number belonged to a legal aid office in Vermont.
Rachel called from New York while they traced it.
She had another development.
Victor had returned to Vale Capital and demanded an immediate shareholder vote to remove Adrian as chief executive.
He claimed Adrian had illegally diverted company security resources to pursue a personal matter.
Adrian almost smiled.
"He's desperate."
Rachel did not agree.
"He's winning the room."
Adrian's expression changed.
"How many votes?"
"If the meeting happened right now, you'd lose."
Olivia stood.
"Then we go back."
Adrian shook his head.
"Your mother may be one phone call away."
"And Victor may control the company in one hour."
She held up Elise's letter.
"My mother spent years trying to expose him."
Her voice steadied.
"I'm not going to let him take the company she trusted to finish it."
Marcus's phone vibrated with the Vermont trace.
He looked at Olivia.
"The number belongs to a woman using the name Ellen Hart."
Olivia's knees nearly weakened again.
"Can we call?"
Marcus nodded.
He dialed.
The line rang twice.
A woman answered.
"Hello?"
Olivia stopped breathing.
It was her mother's voice.
Before she could speak, the call disconnected.
Then a message arrived from the same number.
DO NOT COME HERE. VICTOR IS WATCHING ADRIAN'S PLANE.
Adrian returned to New York by car instead of plane.
It added hours to the trip, but Victor's message about watching the aircraft changed every assumption.
Olivia sat beside him with her mother's last text open on her phone.
She had heard Elise's voice for less than two seconds.
That was enough to turn hope into something almost painful.
"She knew your plane."
Adrian looked out the window.
"Which means Victor has access to our travel systems or someone near the hangar."
Marcus, driving ahead in a second vehicle, had already started checking both.
Rachel called every twenty minutes with updates from the board.
Victor was framing the crisis as a failure of Adrian's judgment.
He avoided discussing Meridian directly.
He avoided Elise Hart entirely.
Instead, he focused on procedure, shareholder confidence, and risk.
That made him dangerous.
He knew respectable language could hide ugly motives more effectively than anger ever could.
The vote was scheduled for noon.
Adrian arrived at headquarters at 11:41.
Olivia entered through a separate underground entrance with Rachel.
Marcus had one objective.
Find the travel-system leak.
Rachel had another.
Keep the outside auditors close enough to act without alerting Victor.
Olivia had chosen her own objective.
Get into the boardroom.
Adrian opposed it until she showed him the first letter from her mother.
"Victor's entire defense depends on making me look unstable, confused, or vindictive."
"Which is exactly why I don't want you in that room."
"And exactly why I need to be there."
Adrian stared at her.
Olivia continued.
"He has spent years speaking for people who were afraid to speak for themselves."
She folded the letter carefully.
"I'm done letting him describe me."
At 11:58, the boardroom doors opened.
Victor sat at the head of the table.
Grant's chair was empty.
Several directors looked uncomfortable when Olivia entered beside Rachel.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"This is a private board session."
Rachel placed a folder on the table.
"Ms. Hart is a material witness to conduct directly related to the Meridian transaction."
Victor looked at Adrian.
"You're turning this into theater."
Adrian took his seat.
"No."
He nodded toward Olivia.
"I'm finally letting someone speak for herself."
Victor called for the vote to begin.
Helen Strauss interrupted.
"Not before we hear the witness."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
Olivia stood at the far end of the table.
She told them about Meridian's employment pressure without dramatizing it.
She described how professional references could be withheld, how housing deductions could trap workers, and how complaints sometimes disappeared.
She described the private calls after she left.
She described the copied badge found inside the Vale residence.
Victor interrupted.
"None of that proves Vale Capital involvement."
Olivia looked directly at him.
"You're right."
She placed Elise's copied invoice on the table.
"This does."
Rachel distributed the records from Room 14.
Victor's face remained controlled.
"Old invoices can be misunderstood."
"Then help us understand them," Adrian said.
Victor refused.

The room shifted.
Board members began asking questions Victor had avoided for years.
