Chapter 4 - The Meeting That Could Not Happen.

No one was inside.
But a small plastic device had been attached to the camera control cable.
It was designed to interrupt the feed remotely.
Olivia recognized the label printed on the back.
"Meridian used those in old care facilities."
Marcus removed it carefully.
"That doesn't prove Mercer placed it here."
"No."
She pointed to a tiny inventory sticker.
"But that number format belongs to Meridian purchasing."
Adrian looked at Marcus.
"Trace it."
Marcus nodded.
Within an hour, their investigators found the inventory record.
The device had been purchased four years earlier for a Meridian training center in Maryland.
The approving executive was Grant Mercer.
The receiving manager was Daniel Cross.
The chain was becoming harder to dismiss.
Yet the most disturbing detail came from a separate review of the Vale residence network.
Someone had been accessing staff location logs for six months.
The account did not search for executives.
It did not search for Adrian.
It searched for Olivia.
Every shift.
Every entry gate.
Every elevator badge swipe.
Every room where she had provided private nursing care to Adrian's recovering aunt.
Olivia stared at the report until the text blurred.
"They knew exactly where I was."
Adrian's voice softened.
"Not anymore."
Marcus shook his head.
"Maybe not."
He placed a printed log on the table.
"The account used to access Olivia's movements belongs to someone with executive-level clearance."
Adrian looked at the username.
MREED-01.
Marcus Reed.
No one moved.
Olivia's eyes lifted slowly toward the assistant.
Marcus stared at the page as if it had insulted him.
"That's my account."
Adrian's expression became unreadable.
"Were you monitoring her?"
"No."
"Could anyone else use your credentials?"
"Not without my token."
Adrian's gaze dropped to Marcus's wrist.
His security token was clipped to his watchband.
Marcus removed it immediately and placed it on the table.
"Take it."
Adrian did not touch it.
"Marcus."
"I've been with you eleven years."
"I know."
"Then you know I didn't do this."
Olivia looked between them.
Her phone vibrated once more.
This time the message contained no threat.
It contained a photograph.
The image showed Marcus entering Olivia's apartment building two nights earlier.
Marcus went pale.
"I have never been there before tonight."
Adrian looked at him.
"Then someone wants me to believe you have."
Olivia enlarged the image.
The man's face looked like Marcus.
The coat looked like Marcus's.
Even the watch appeared identical.
But near the bottom of the photograph, reflected in the apartment lobby mirror, was something none of them noticed at first.
The man in the image was holding a cane.
Marcus had never used one.
Adrian leaned closer.
"That's not you."
Marcus stared at the reflection.
"No."
Olivia whispered, "Then who is trying this hard to make us stop trusting each other?"
The answer began inside a locked records room on the twenty-third floor of Vale Capital headquarters.
Adrian moved the investigation away from the residence before sunrise and brought only Marcus, Olivia, and outside counsel Rachel Kim.
Rachel had worked with Adrian for nine years and had no reporting line to Victor Hale.
That was the only reason Marcus trusted her with what they had found.
The executive archives were mostly digital, but Elias Vale had insisted on keeping certain merger documents in paper form.
Rachel used a master key to open a gray cabinet labeled SPECIAL PROJECTS.
Inside were twelve boxes.
The eighth box carried the Meridian name.
Olivia stopped breathing for a moment.
Adrian lifted the lid.
The first file inside was not a contract.
It was a personnel profile.
OLIVIA HART.
Her photograph was from her first year in nursing school.
The file contained her old address, her scholarships, her employment history, and even the name of the coffee shop where she had worked weekends.
Olivia took a step backward.
"Why did your father have this?"
Adrian looked as shaken as she did.
"I don't know."
Marcus turned pages carefully.
Most were routine background documents until he reached a yellow memorandum.
The header read PRIVATE RISK REVIEW.
The first line was worse.
SUBJECT: ELISE HART / DEPENDENT CHILD: OLIVIA HART.
Olivia sat down in the nearest chair.
Rachel read silently for several seconds.
"This says your mother contacted Elias Vale directly."
Olivia looked up.
"About what?"
"Meridian."
Rachel continued reading.
Elise Hart had provided evidence that Meridian executives were using financial pressure, housing contracts, and professional references to control temporary medical staff.
She alleged that complaints were removed before audits and that outside investors were being given false compliance reports.
The documents did not show Elias covering it up.
They showed him opening a private investigation.
Adrian felt an unexpected wave of relief, followed immediately by anger.
"Why was this never finished?"
Rachel turned to the last page.
"Because the investigation was suspended."
"By whom?"
There was a signature.
VICTOR HALE.
Adrian's face became still.
The date was three days after Elise Hart disappeared.
Olivia covered her mouth.
"He stopped it."
Rachel nodded.
"According to this memo, Victor claimed Elise withdrew her allegations."
"She didn't."
Olivia's voice was firm now.
"She would never leave that notebook if she had withdrawn anything."
Marcus searched the box.
"The notebook isn't here."
"Someone took it from her apartment."
Adrian lifted another folder.
Inside was a short handwritten note from Elias.
A.H. MUST BE PROTECTED UNTIL WE KNOW WHO INSIDE THE COMPANY IS COMPROMISED.
Adrian stared at the initials.
"A.H.?"
Olivia looked confused.
"My initials are O.H."
Rachel turned the note over.
On the back, Elias had written a second line.
ASK ANNA BEFORE YOU TRUST VICTOR.
Adrian's expression changed.
Anna Vale was his mother.
She had died five years earlier.
"My mother knew about this."
Marcus leaned against the cabinet.
"Apparently."
Olivia looked at Adrian.
"Did she ever mention my mother?"
"Never."
"Did your father?"
"No."
Rachel closed the box.
"Then we need to find out what Anna knew."
Adrian thought of his mother's personal belongings, most of which had been moved to storage after her death.
One room at the family estate remained untouched.
Her private writing room.
Before they could leave, Rachel's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and looked at Adrian.
"Victor has called an emergency board meeting for noon."
"On what authority?"
"He says you've become emotionally compromised and endangered the Meridian acquisition without explanation."
Adrian almost laughed.
"Convenient."
Rachel was not smiling.
"He's asking the board to temporarily restrict your signing authority."
Marcus looked toward the security camera in the archive.
"He's moving fast because he knows we're close."
Olivia stood.
May you like
"Then go to the meeting."
Adrian shook his head.
