Chapter 10 - Six O'Clock.

The emergency board meeting began at six exactly.

Emma attended from the Reed Capital conference room with Rachel seated beside her.

Adrian and her brothers remained outside.

That decision was deliberate.

Ethan had spent years claiming Emma's family controlled her.

Tonight, the record would show Emma speaking for herself.

Seven directors appeared on the secure video wall.

Samuel Price sat at the far end of the physical table.

Two outside directors joined remotely from New York.

Ethan appeared from a conference room downtown.

Margaret sat beside him in a cream suit, composed enough to look bored.

Emma recognized the performance.

Margaret always treated serious problems like social misunderstandings.

The board secretary called the meeting to order.

Ethan immediately raised his hand.

“I object to this entire proceeding.”

Emma did not react.

The secretary asked him to state the basis.

“My wife is under extreme emotional strain and has been isolated by her family.”

Samuel looked at Emma.

Emma leaned toward the microphone.

“I am present voluntarily, and my counsel is present at my request.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You were assaulted by your brothers' presence today.”

Emma's stomach turned at the reversal.

Nobody in the room moved.

Rachel wrote something on her legal pad.

Emma kept her voice level.

“My brothers did not touch you.”

“That is not the point.”

“No.”

“The point is that you filed documents using my signature.”

Ethan leaned back.

“I deny that characterization.”

The board secretary asked Rachel to summarize the evidence.

Rachel did so without emotion.

Unauthorized trust amendment.

Disputed witness signature.

Attempted eight-point-four-million-dollar transfer.

Forged board consent.

A proposed Northstar acquisition involving an entity connected to Margaret Bennett.

Margaret interrupted.

“Aster Lane is a legitimate private investment vehicle.”

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“No one said it wasn't.”

Margaret's expression tightened.

Emma noticed.

People accustomed to controlling a conversation often revealed themselves when nobody gave them the fight they expected.

Ethan leaned forward.

“Northstar is a strong opportunity.”

Samuel spoke for the first time.

“Then why was the treasury request sent to an entity named after Lauren Vale?”

Ethan did not answer immediately.

Margaret looked at him.

That glance was different from the others.

It contained irritation.

Emma saw it.

Ethan finally said, “LV Strategic was a temporary vehicle.”

Lauren's attorney had already sent written notice that she denied owning the entity.

Rachel read the relevant line aloud.

Ethan's face changed.

“You've been speaking to Lauren?”

Emma almost smiled.

“That is what concerns you?”

“She is unreliable.”

“You hired her.”

“For a limited purpose.”

“Apparently very limited.”

One of the outside directors cleared his throat.

“Can we focus on authority?”

Rachel nodded.

She introduced the conditional trust letter.

Ethan's expression shifted immediately.

Margaret's shifted more.

Emma watched her mother-in-law look down at the table for the first time all evening.

Rachel explained that the attempted trust transfer triggered a forty-eight-hour protective suspension covering Northstar and connected entities.

Ethan objected.

Margaret objected louder.

The board secretary asked whether either had a legal basis.

Neither provided one.

Samuel then moved to suspend Ethan's authority over treasury and acquisitions pending independent review.

A second director supported the motion.

The vote passed five to one, with Ethan abstaining because his eligibility was under review.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Emma expected rage.

Instead, he smiled.

It was the calmest expression he had worn all day.

“Fine.”

Margaret looked at him sharply.

Emma felt a warning in that single word.

Ethan continued.

“You can freeze the transfer.”

“You can freeze Northstar.”

“You can even suspend me.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“But you are all looking at the wrong transaction.”

Samuel frowned.

“What transaction?”

Ethan's smile widened.

“The one that closed this morning.”

Emma's pulse jumped.

Rachel whispered, “Do not react.”

Emma kept her face still.

The board secretary asked Ethan to identify the transaction.

He shook his head.

“You'll find it.”

Margaret looked furious now.

That mattered more than Ethan's smile.

She had not known.

Emma suddenly understood.

Ethan had hidden something from his own mother.

The meeting ended with instructions for Samuel and the independent auditors to review every transaction from the previous ninety days.

As soon as the screen went dark, Emma turned to Rachel.

“He surprised Margaret.”

“I saw.”

“What could he close without my signature?”

Rachel looked toward Samuel.

Samuel was already typing.

“Small asset sales.”

“Vendor contracts.”

“Certain licensing agreements.”

Emma thought of the Reed portfolio.

Then she remembered a subsidiary almost nobody discussed anymore.

A small technology unit her father had created to manage hotel reservation software.

“Harbor Systems.”

Samuel stopped typing.

“What about it?”

“Who owns the software licenses used by our hotels?”

Samuel's face went pale.

“Harbor.”

Emma stood.

“Check it.”

Samuel opened the transaction ledger.

Thirty seconds later, he looked up.

“The licensing rights were sold this morning.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“To whom?”

Samuel swallowed.

“Aster Lane Partners.”
