Chapter 4 - The Locked Office.

Adrian looked up the staircase but did not move immediately.
“Derek, call the property security team.”
Derek was already doing it.
Emma watched Ethan instead of the stairs.
His eyes had gone toward the service corridor near the back of the foyer.
It was the kind of glance most people would miss.
Emma did not.
“Who is upstairs?”
Ethan's shoulders lifted in a forced shrug.
“I don't know.”
“You know something.”
“I know this house has staff, contractors, cleaners, landscapers, and people your family sends in without telling me.”
Emma held his gaze.
“I sent everyone home.”
Lauren slowly moved closer to the center of the room.
“Ethan, did you give my assistant a gate code?”
Ethan's face changed.
Emma turned toward Lauren.
“Your assistant?”
Lauren looked embarrassed.
“Caleb Shaw.”
Rachel's brows lifted.
“The man who notarized the Northstar loan summary?”
Lauren nodded.
Emma felt anger rise, but she kept her voice level.
“Is Caleb supposed to be here?”
“No.”
Derek ended his call.
“The property team is two minutes out.”
Adrian glanced at Emma.
“Do you want us to stay here?”
“Yes.”
Her answer came without hesitation.
It mattered to her that the choice was hers.
A door opened upstairs.
Footsteps moved quickly across the landing.
A slim man in a gray jacket appeared at the top of the stairs carrying a laptop bag and a narrow black document case.
Lauren stared at him.
“Caleb?”
He stopped so abruptly that the bag struck his leg.
Nobody rushed him.
Nobody needed to.
Adrian simply looked up.
“Put the case on the floor, please.”
Caleb's eyes went immediately to Ethan.
That was answer enough for Emma.
Ethan raised his hands.
“I have no idea why he's here.”
Caleb looked betrayed.
“You told me to clear the—”
He stopped himself.
Lauren closed her eyes.
Emma felt her stomach tighten.
“The what?”
Caleb stared at Ethan.
Ethan spoke over him.
“He is a contractor.”
Emma kept her attention on Caleb.
“What did he tell you to clear?”
Caleb's face had gone pale.
The security team entered through the open front doors, two uniformed private officers who knew Emma by name.
Adrian gestured toward the stairs.
“Please escort him down without taking anything from him.”
Caleb obeyed before they even reached him.
He placed the black case on the carpeted landing and walked down slowly.
Lauren looked furious now.
“You used my assistant to enter her office?”
Ethan gave her a cutting look.
“Your assistant has access because you asked for efficiency.”
“I asked for access to the company data room.”
“Same system.”
“No, it isn't.”
Emma's attention sharpened.
Lauren knew more about their systems than Emma expected.
Rachel noticed too.
“Ms. Vale, what exactly was your consulting role?”
Lauren crossed her arms.
“I was hired to review financing structures for Northstar.”
“By whom?”
“Ethan.”
“Using company funds?”
Lauren hesitated.
“Yes.”
Emma took a slow breath.
She remembered asking the chief financial officer why outside advisory expenses had doubled.
Ethan had said it was due to market expansion.
She had been seven months pregnant and exhausted from a week of travel.
She had believed him because believing her husband had been easier than opening another fight.
That memory now felt like a bill coming due.
The property officers brought Caleb to the bottom of the stairs.
The black document case remained upstairs.
Emma looked at him.
“Why were you in my office?”
Caleb shifted his weight.
“I was told there were duplicate files that needed to be removed before the audit.”
Rachel's expression changed.
“What audit?”
Caleb looked at Ethan again.
Ethan's voice became cold.
“You should stop talking.”
Caleb looked back at Emma.
“The internal compliance audit scheduled for Monday.”
Emma frowned.
“I didn't schedule an audit.”
Rachel did not speak.
Adrian looked at her.
“You did?”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
Lauren stared at Ethan.
“Then who did?”
Caleb swallowed.
“Mrs. Bennett's father.”
Emma's breath caught.
“My father died fourteen months ago.”
“I know.”
Caleb's voice was barely audible.
“The audit was scheduled before he died.”
Rachel took a step closer.
“That makes no sense.”
Caleb shook his head.
“It wasn't scheduled for a date.”
“It was triggered by a condition.”
Emma felt the hairs on her arms rise.
“What condition?”
Caleb looked at the floor.
“A request to transfer more than fifteen percent of the voting trust.”
Everyone looked at Ethan.
He stared back at them with a blank expression that was almost impressive.
Emma understood suddenly why he had needed the amendment.
It was not only about control.
The amendment itself had activated something her father had built into the trust.
Rachel opened her document case again.
“There may be a sealed instruction letter in the trust archive.”
Emma looked at her.
“You never told me that.”
“I didn't know the trigger had been met.”
Ethan walked toward the back corridor.
Adrian did not touch him.
“Where are you going?”
Ethan turned.
“To pack.”
Emma almost believed him.
Then the security panel chimed a third time.
Derek looked at the screen.
“The garage door just opened.”
Emma looked toward the corridor Ethan had chosen.
And she realized he was not going upstairs for clothes.
He was going for the car.
