Chapter 5 - The Garage Door.

Ethan reached the service corridor before Adrian spoke.
“Emma, do you want him stopped from leaving?”
The question mattered.
Everyone waited for her answer.
Emma looked at her husband and saw the trap immediately.
If she ordered her brothers to block him, Ethan would later describe himself as a prisoner in his own home.
She had spent enough years being told that every boundary she set was an attack.
“No.”
Ethan turned, surprised.
Emma held his gaze.
“He can leave.”
Adrian nodded once.
Ethan gave a tight smile and disappeared down the corridor.
Lauren watched him go.
“You're just letting him walk out?”
“I am letting him make his own decisions.”
Rachel closed the folder in her hands.
“And those decisions will be documented.”
A moment later, the sound of a car engine came from the garage.
Emma expected relief.
Instead, she felt something colder.
Ethan had not gone upstairs for a suitcase.
He had not asked where he should stay.
He had not asked about the baby.
He had gone directly to the garage.
Derek checked the security panel again.
“The black Range Rover is leaving.”
Emma frowned.
“That vehicle belongs to the company.”
Rachel made a note.
Lauren sat down on the bottom stair as if her knees had stopped cooperating.
“I need to tell you something.”
Emma remained standing.
“Start with the truth.”
Lauren nodded.
“I met Ethan eight months ago at the Harrington conference.”
“He told me you had withdrawn from the business because of the pregnancy.”
Emma almost laughed.
“I chaired a board meeting three days before that conference.”
“I know that now.”
“Did you know it then?”
“No.”
Lauren looked ashamed.
“He said the board kept your name on materials because your family reputation reassured investors.”
Cole muttered something under his breath.
Emma ignored it.
“What else did he say?”
“That your marriage was effectively over.”
The foyer became very still.
Emma had expected the answer.
Hearing it still hurt.
Lauren looked at her quickly.
“I am not saying that to hurt you.”
“Were you involved with my husband?”
Lauren's eyes filled with panic.
“Not the way you're thinking.”
Emma said nothing.
Lauren took a breath.
“He flirted with me.”
“I let him.”
“But I was more interested in the Northstar deal than in him.”
“That does not make this better.”
“I know.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Why Northstar?”
Lauren looked at her.
“Because whoever acquires it also acquires a long-term lease on three downtown properties.”
Emma knew those properties.
They sat beside the proposed rail redevelopment district.
Her father had investigated them years earlier.
He had rejected Northstar because the debt burden outweighed the real estate value at the time.
But the city council had approved the new transit plan four months ago.
The land was worth far more now.
Emma's mind moved quickly.
“Ethan wasn't buying a hotel company.”
Rachel nodded.
“He was buying the leases.”
Lauren looked at Emma.
“And he needed your trust to guarantee the financing.”
Emma turned toward Rachel.
“Could he do that with the amendment?”
“If the amendment were valid, he could probably create enough apparent authority to get through an initial closing.”
“Long enough to move the asset.”
“Possibly.”
Lauren covered her face with both hands.
“I witnessed it.”
“You witnessed a document you were told was valid.”
Emma's tone was not forgiving.
It was precise.
“There is a difference between being deceived and refusing to ask questions.”
Lauren lowered her hands.
“You think I should have known.”
“I think you did know some things didn't add up.”
Lauren did not argue.
That silence was its own confession.
The front doors remained open, and a warm breeze moved the curtain near the side windows.
For the first time, Emma realized how tired she was.
Adrian noticed too.
“You should sit down.”
“I am fine.”
“You don't have to prove that to us.”
The words almost broke her composure.
Ethan had spent years turning ordinary care into evidence that her family thought she was weak.
Now Adrian's sentence landed differently.
Emma sat on the upholstered bench beside the staircase.
Rachel's phone rang.
She answered after looking at the number.
“Yes?”
Her expression changed immediately.
“Which bank?”
Emma stood again.
Rachel held up one finger and listened.
“When was the transfer initiated?”
She looked directly at Emma.
“No, do not process anything further until I call you back.”
Rachel ended the call.
“What happened?”
“Bennett Capital's treasury team just flagged a wire request.”
“How much?”
“Eight point four million dollars.”
Emma felt her mouth go dry.
“To whom?”
Rachel looked down at her notes.
“A holding company called LV Strategic Partners.”
Lauren rose from the stair.
Her face had gone completely white.
Emma looked at her.
“What does LV stand for?”
Lauren whispered the answer.
“Lauren Vale.”
