Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind Aster Lane.

Emma had not seen Ethan's mother, Margaret Bennett, in almost four months.
Margaret had sent polite messages about the pregnancy and excuses about travel.
She had also spent years telling Emma that Ethan needed room to lead.
At first, Emma had mistaken that advice for old-fashioned loyalty to a son.
Now the pattern looked different.
“Are you sure?”
Caleb nodded.
“I met her there twice.”
Rachel looked skeptical.
“What did you deliver?”
“Loan drafts and a valuation packet.”
“Did you read them?”
“No.”
Lauren gave him a look.
Caleb corrected himself.
“I read the cover pages.”
Emma almost smiled despite herself.
“Better.”
Rachel searched corporate records again.
“Margaret's name isn't attached to Aster Lane.”
“That doesn't mean much.”
Adrian folded his arms.
“Does Ethan's family have enough money to fund Northstar?”
Emma shook her head.
“Not directly.”
The Bennett family had once been wealthy.
By the time Emma met Ethan, the family name remained more valuable than the family balance sheet.
Ethan never lied about that exactly.
He simply let people assume the old estate photographs represented current reality.
Emma had admired what she thought was his determination to rebuild.
She now wondered when ambition had turned into entitlement.
Rachel's phone rang again.
This time she stepped away to answer it.
Lauren paced near the staircase.
“What happens if Aster Lane owns part of Northstar?”
Emma answered carefully.
“Then Ethan may be trying to use my family's money to buy an asset from an entity connected to his own family.”
Lauren stopped.
“That would mean he profits on both sides.”
“Potentially.”
“And he put my name on the transfer company.”
“Potentially.”
Lauren looked furious.
“He was setting me up.”
Emma met her eyes.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Do not make the same mistake I made.”
“What mistake?”
“Deciding what Ethan is doing before you have all the documents.”
Lauren looked at her for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
Rachel returned.
“I found the beneficial owner.”
Everyone became still.
“Aster Lane is controlled through a family management trust.”
Emma already knew the answer before Rachel finished.
“Margaret?”
“Yes.”
Lauren let out a sharp breath.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Rachel continued.
“And Aster Lane acquired its Northstar interest nine months ago.”
Emma calculated quickly.
“That was one month before Lauren met Ethan.”
Lauren looked at her.
“So this started before me.”
“Long before you.”
Emma felt an unexpected relief at the certainty.
Lauren had complicated the marriage.
She had not created the scheme.
Ethan had already been moving pieces.
Derek approached with another update.
“The investigator saw Margaret enter the building.”
“When?”
“Eight minutes ago.”
Emma looked toward the open doors.
The sunlight had shifted across the marble floor.
Hours seemed to have passed inside a single afternoon.
Adrian asked the obvious question.
“Do you want to go downtown?”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“If Ethan wants a confrontation, he won't get one.”
Rachel smiled slightly.
“That is the correct instinct.”
Emma looked at her.
“What can we do instead?”
“Call an emergency board meeting.”
“Today?”
“Yes.”
“Can we suspend his financial authority?”
“If the bylaws allow it and the evidence supports it.”
Emma felt something inside her settle.
This was territory she understood.
Not screaming in a foyer.
Not whispered accusations.
Governance.
Records.
Votes.
Rules written before anyone knew whose side they would favor.
“Schedule it for six.”
Rachel nodded.
“I'll notify every director.”
Lauren looked uncertain.
“What should I do?”
Emma considered the question.
“Go home with an independent security escort.”
“Collect your documents.”
“Do not delete anything.”
“Do not answer Ethan's calls.”
“And get your own lawyer.”
Lauren blinked.
“You're helping me?”
“No.”
Emma's answer was immediate.
“I am telling you how not to make this worse.”
Lauren accepted that.
Before leaving, she stopped beside Emma.
“I believed terrible things about you.”
Emma looked at her.
“So did I.”
Lauren frowned.
“About me?”
“About myself.”
Lauren had no answer for that.
She walked toward the doors with Derek and one of the licensed security officers.
As she stepped outside, her phone rang again.
She ignored it.
Then Emma's phone lit up.
Margaret Bennett.
Emma stared at the name.
Adrian looked at her.
“You don't have to answer.”
Emma accepted the call.
“Hello, Margaret.”
Her mother-in-law's voice was calm and almost warm.
“Emma, darling, I think everyone needs to stop overreacting.”
Emma's eyes hardened.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
Emma looked at Rachel.
Rachel silently shook her head.
Margaret was lying.
Emma kept her tone neutral.
“Then you won't mind telling me why Aster Lane owns part of Northstar.”
There was a pause.
It lasted less than two seconds.
It was still the most honest thing Margaret had given her all day.
Then Margaret said quietly, “Your father should have sold us that company when he had the chance.”
