Chapter 3 - The Name on the Page.

Mason read the name twice before he spoke.

“That isn't my signature.”

His voice was so flat that Ethan could not mistake it for confusion.

Rachel handed him the filing copy.

Mason studied the page while Cole moved beside him.

Emma watched her brother's face grow harder with every line.

“I wasn't even in the country on that date.”

Rachel nodded.

“I know.”

“You checked?”

“I checked after Emma called me yesterday.”

Mason looked at his sister.

“You knew my name was on this?”

“I found out this morning.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Emma lowered her eyes.

“Because I wanted you calm when you walked through that door.”

Mason looked at Ethan.

Adrian immediately stepped between them, not dramatically, but enough to make the message clear.

“This ends through lawyers.”

Mason gave a short nod.

Ethan seemed almost relieved by that sentence.

He reached for the water again.

“Good.”

“Then the lawyers can explain the clerical mistake.”

Rachel closed her document case.

“A clerical mistake does not usually copy a family member's signature.”

“Are you accusing me of something?”

“I am telling you what the documents show.”

Emma noticed Lauren staring at the floor.

“Lauren, who gave you the final packet?”

Lauren pressed her lips together.

“Ethan.”

“Was Mason's signature already there?”

“Yes.”

Ethan snapped his head toward her.

“You don't remember that.”

Lauren recoiled slightly.

“I remember because I asked why he hadn't signed in blue ink like the other witness forms.”

Emma's pulse quickened.

“What did Ethan say?”

Lauren hesitated.

“He said Mason was traveling and had signed digitally.”

Mason held up the page.

“This isn't digital.”

Rachel looked at Ethan.

“Exactly.”

The front door remained open behind them, filling the foyer with daylight and the distant sound of sprinklers from the lawn.

It was such an ordinary afternoon sound that Emma almost laughed at the contrast.

Her marriage was coming apart under a chandelier while the garden watered itself on schedule.

Ethan put both hands on his hips.

“I want everyone out.”

Emma answered before anyone else could.

“No.”

He stared at her.

“You don't get to order me out of my own home.”

Emma reached into the folder Rachel had brought.

“This property is held by the Reed Family Residence Trust.”

Ethan's mouth tightened.

“You put my name on the deed after we married.”

“No.”

“You told me you did.”

“I told you I added you as a resident beneficiary.”

“That is the same thing.”

Rachel shook her head.

“It is not remotely the same thing.”

Lauren looked from Ethan to Emma.

“You told me this mansion was collateral for Northstar.”

Emma felt another piece click into place.

Rachel turned sharply toward Lauren.

“What exactly did he tell you?”

Lauren took a breath.

“That the house could secure the bridge loan.”

“It cannot.”

Rachel's answer was immediate.

“The residence trust prohibits commercial encumbrances.”

Ethan laughed again.

“You people love making everything sound criminal.”

Emma shook her head.

“No one used that word.”

“You're thinking it.”

“I am thinking about why you needed an amendment to my voting trust and why you told Lauren this house could secure debt.”

Ethan turned toward the staircase.

“I need my laptop.”

Adrian did not block him.

“Go get it.”

Ethan stopped.

The permission seemed to bother him.

Emma understood why.

He had expected resistance.

He wanted resistance.

Resistance would let him become the wronged husband surrounded by his wife's aggressive family.

Adrian was giving him nothing to use.

Ethan climbed three steps, then turned.

“Lauren, come with me.”

Lauren did not move.

“Why?”

“We need to talk.”

“We can talk here.”

His expression hardened.

“Now.”

Emma looked at Lauren.

“You don't have to go anywhere.”

Lauren gave her a bitter little smile.

“You don't owe me kindness.”

“I am not being kind.”

Emma's voice was calm.

“I am making sure nobody controls where another person stands in this room.”

Lauren's eyes filled with something that looked uncomfortably like shame.

Ethan came back down the steps.

“This is ridiculous.”

Then a deep electronic chime sounded from somewhere upstairs.

Everyone looked toward the second floor.

Ethan froze.

Emma recognized the sound.

It was the security system alert for the home office.

Mason looked at Adrian.

“Somebody just opened the office safe.”

Ethan spoke too quickly.

“The housekeeper is upstairs.”

Emma shook her head.

“I sent the staff home this morning.”

The chime sounded again.

Derek was already checking the security panel near the door.

His expression changed.

“The office door opened with Ethan's secondary code.”

Ethan took one step back.

Emma stared at him.

“If you're standing here,” she said, “who is upstairs?”

A faint sound came from the second-floor hallway.

Then the office door closed.
