Chapter 6 - The Account With Her Name.

Lauren stared at Rachel as though the words had been spoken in another language.

“I don't have a holding company.”

Rachel held up the phone.

“The transfer request says otherwise.”

“I've never heard of LV Strategic Partners.”

Emma studied her face.

Lauren looked terrified, but fear was not proof of innocence.

“Did Ethan ever ask you to form an entity?”

“No.”

“Did you sign any incorporation documents?”

Lauren shook her head.

“Not knowingly.”

That last word changed the room.

Rachel opened her case again and pulled out a legal pad.

“What did you sign for him?”

Lauren began counting on her fingers.

“A consulting agreement.”

“A confidentiality agreement.”

“Two lender acknowledgments.”

“A witness certification.”

“And a tax form.”

Rachel looked up.

“Did you keep copies?”

“Some.”

“Where?”

“My apartment.”

Emma glanced toward Adrian.

“Can someone go with her?”

Lauren immediately stiffened.

“I don't need an escort.”

Emma shook her head.

“Not to control you.”

“To make sure nobody gets there first.”

Lauren's expression shifted.

She understood the implication.

Caleb was still standing near the property officers.

He suddenly spoke.

“You should listen to her.”

Lauren turned toward him.

“What do you know?”

Caleb looked exhausted now.

“Ethan asked me yesterday whether you kept paper files at home.”

Lauren stared at him.

“You told him?”

“I said I didn't know.”

“You knew I did.”

“I lied.”

For the first time that afternoon, Lauren looked grateful to someone.

Emma watched the exchange carefully.

Caleb had made bad decisions, but he did not look loyal to Ethan anymore.

Rachel asked the property officers to document the black case from upstairs and secure it without opening anything until the attorneys could establish chain of custody.

Emma appreciated the caution.

Every instinct in the room wanted answers immediately.

The law rewarded patience.

Her father used to say that people made their worst mistakes when they confused urgency with permission.

She could hear his voice now.

Adrian sat beside her on the bench.

“Do you remember where Dad kept the old trust archive?”

Emma nodded.

“The downtown vault.”

“Rachel said there may be a sealed instruction letter.”

“I know.”

“You want me to get it?”

Emma thought for a moment.

“No.”

“I want to go myself.”

Adrian looked at her pregnancy and then at her face.

He did not argue.

“Then we go together.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“That is different.”

“From what?”

“From deciding for me.”

Adrian's expression softened.

“We should have learned that sooner.”

The admission surprised her.

For years, Ethan had insisted that her brothers would never admit fault.

Emma was beginning to realize how many of his claims had survived only because she stopped checking them.

Lauren's phone buzzed again.

This time she showed the screen to everyone.

The message came from Ethan.

DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS UNTIL I CALL YOU.

A second message appeared immediately.

REMEMBER WHAT YOU SIGNED.

Lauren looked at Emma.

“That sounds like a warning.”

Rachel corrected her gently.

“It sounds like something we preserve.”

Lauren took screenshots and emailed them to Rachel while everyone watched.

Emma's own phone rang next.

The caller ID showed the chief financial officer of Bennett Capital, Samuel Price.

Emma answered.

“Sam.”

His voice came quickly.

“I need you to tell me whether Ethan is authorized to move treasury funds today.”

“He is not.”

“Good.”

Emma frowned.

“Why good?”

“Because he just called my office and told us you were medically unavailable.”

The words landed like a door closing.

Emma's hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said your family had taken you away from the house and that he was assuming temporary authority.”

Adrian heard enough to stand.

Emma raised one hand.

“Sam, I am at home, I am safe, and I am fully capable of making decisions.”

“I thought so.”

“Freeze any non-routine transfer until the board reviews it.”

“I already did.”

“Thank you.”

Samuel hesitated.

“There is something else.”

Emma closed her eyes briefly.

“Of course there is.”

“The transfer request to LV Strategic came with an attached board consent.”

Emma looked at Rachel.

“I never signed a consent.”

“I know.”

“Whose signatures are on it?”

Samuel read the names slowly.

Two directors were legitimate.

One had resigned six months ago.

And the final signature belonged to Emma.

Her name again.

Her authority again.

Her life being used like a password.

Emma's voice stayed steady.

“Send everything to Rachel Sloan.”

“I will.”

Then Samuel said something that changed the direction of the entire day.

“Emma, the file metadata says the consent was created from Lauren Vale's laptop.”

Lauren's face collapsed.

“That is impossible.”

Caleb looked at her.

“No,” he said quietly.

“It isn't.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Caleb swallowed.

“Ethan had your laptop cloned three months ago.”

May you like
