Chapter 10 - The Secret Vivian Kept.

Claire turned from the door and looked at her mother.

Vivian did not ask what Ethan meant.

That was enough.

"Tell me."

Vivian folded her arms tightly.

"Not now."

Claire's patience finally cracked.

"Everyone keeps saying not now."

Her voice rose for the first time that night.

"Ethan says not now."

"Grant says not now."

"You say not now."

She placed the black folder on the table between them.

"My wedding is in a few hours, my fiance may have been recruited to get close to me before we ever met, and someone inserted a rejected company-control document into papers I was supposed to sign."

Claire looked directly at her mother.

"Now is all we have."

Vivian sat down.

When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet.

Five years earlier, Thomas Bennett had discovered that Grant was pushing for a new governance structure.

Grant argued that the family company needed one executive with emergency authority during crises.

Thomas initially considered the idea.

Then he learned Grant had already promised several investors that he would eventually control the board.

"Your father confronted him privately," Vivian said.

"Grant apologized and said he had been trying to reassure nervous investors."

Thomas did not believe him.

He rejected the proxy and began quietly reducing Grant's access.

Then Thomas became ill.

After his death, Vivian chose not to reveal the dispute.

She feared a public family fight would destabilize the company and hurt Claire while she was grieving.

Claire stared at her.

"So you kept Grant as vice chairman."

"I thought losing your father had changed him."

"Did it?"

Vivian looked at the payment records.

"Apparently not."

Claire walked to the window.

Below them, delivery trucks were pulling into the hotel's loading area.

White flowers were arriving for a wedding that would never happen.

"Did Dad leave anything else?"

Vivian hesitated.

Then she nodded.

Thomas had maintained a private archive separate from the company servers.

It contained handwritten notes, board drafts, and personal instructions.

Vivian had not opened it in years.

The archive was stored in the hotel owner's office because Thomas had used the Aurelia Grand as his second workplace.

Claire looked at Marcus.

"Take me there."

At 5:42 a.m., they entered the dark office behind the hotel's executive lobby.

Vivian unlocked a cabinet concealed behind a framed architectural drawing.

Inside were three gray boxes.

The second contained a folder labeled G.H. - Governance.

Claire opened it on the desk.

Her father's handwriting covered the first page.

Grant is not dangerous because he wants authority.

He is dangerous because he believes wanting it makes him entitled to it.

Claire continued reading.

Thomas had documented several private conversations with Grant.

One note referenced a young consultant Grant wanted to recruit for a future hospitality venture.

The consultant's first name was Ethan.

The date was nearly two years before Claire met him.

Vivian covered her mouth.

Claire felt no shock this time.

Only confirmation.

Then Marcus found a sealed envelope at the back of the box.

Claire's name was written across it in her father's handwriting.

For Claire, if Grant ever asks you to sign quickly.

Her fingers trembled for the first time all night.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a short letter and a small brass key.

May you like

The letter contained one instruction.

Do not confront him until you know what the key opens.
