Chapter 13 - The Story Behind the First Hello.

The ballroom looked almost unreal at that hour.
Hundreds of white flowers framed the aisle.
Crystal chandeliers glowed over rows of empty chairs.
At the far end, Ethan stood beneath the arch where he had expected to marry Claire that evening.
He had changed into his wedding suit.
That detail irritated her more than she expected.
"Why are you dressed?"
Ethan looked down at himself.
"Because some part of me kept hoping you'd still walk down this aisle."
Claire stopped several feet away.
Marcus remained near the doors.
Naomi stood beyond him.
"Tell me about the museum gala."
Ethan closed his eyes.
When he opened them, the arrogance from the video call was gone.
"Grant gave me your name."
Claire's chest tightened.
"Before that night?"
"Yes."
Grant had told Ethan that Claire would eventually inherit more influence in Bennett Hospitality than she understood.
He said she needed someone practical beside her.
He described her interests, her charity work, and the museum foundation she supported.
Then he arranged for Ethan to receive an invitation to the gala.
"So our first conversation was staged."
"The meeting was."
Ethan stepped forward.
Marcus shifted slightly.
Ethan stopped.
"What happened after wasn't supposed to be."
Claire almost hated him for sounding sincere.
He said Grant originally asked him only to earn her trust and learn how she felt about company decisions.
Ethan agreed because Grant had promised him money and a senior role.
Then Ethan fell in love with her.
Claire's expression did not change.
"And kept reporting to him."
"At first."
"And opened Mercer Strategic Hospitality."
"Yes."
"And let him move money through it."
Ethan looked away.
"Yes."
Each answer stripped another excuse from the room.
Claire opened the black folder.
"The proxy?"
"Grant's idea."
"Did you put it in my packet?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Yes."
Claire had expected the answer.
Hearing it still hurt.
"Why?"
"He told me it was temporary."
"You knew I hadn't agreed to it."
"Yes."
"You knew it was hidden among papers I trusted."
"Yes."
Claire closed the folder.
"Then don't tell me you were protecting me."
Ethan's eyes filled with shame.
"I wasn't."
For the first time all night, he gave her an answer without trying to rescue himself.
He told her the Zurich account held the consulting payments Grant had moved through Ethan's company.
Ethan claimed he had frozen his own access two days earlier after realizing Grant intended to remove Vivian from the board.
Naomi called the bank from the ballroom and confirmed only that the account was currently restricted pending internal review.
Nothing more could be verified yet.
Claire did not reward Ethan for that small act.
"Why didn't you tell me two days ago?"
"Because I thought I could stop Grant without losing you."
"So you chose the version where you kept me and kept lying."
Ethan had no answer.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
Ethan slowly removed a flash drive and placed it on a nearby table.
"This is what Grant gave me last night."
Claire did not touch it.
"What's on it?"
"A presentation for the board."
"About what?"
Ethan's face became grim.
"Your mother."
The presentation had been designed to make Vivian appear financially reckless and unfit to remain chair.
Several numbers were real.
Several had been altered.
Grant expected Ethan to deliver the file anonymously after the wedding.
Claire looked toward the flower-covered aisle.
Her wedding had been intended to become the distraction while her mother's position was attacked.
Ethan whispered, "I'm sorry."
Claire looked at the man she had planned to marry.
"You should be."
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Vivian stood there with six members of the Bennett Hospitality board.
May you like
Behind them was Grant.
And he was smiling.
