Chapter 7 - The Friend Who Opened the Call.

Claire did not sleep.
At 3:00 a.m., Noah agreed to meet Naomi in a small conference room on the executive floor.
Marcus and Daniel remained outside.
Claire sat across from Noah with the black folder closed between them.
She placed the bank photograph on top.
"Start talking."
Noah stared at it.
"Grant sent you this?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Noah rubbed his palms together.
"Because Grant took that picture."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
Noah explained that eight months earlier, Ethan had asked him to help open a business account for Mercer Strategic Hospitality.
Noah believed it was a legitimate consulting company.
He had gone to the bank as a witness because Ethan claimed a foreign client required additional verification.
"Was the account in Zurich?"
Noah nodded.
"The bank had a private international desk."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"How much money is in it?"
"I don't know."
"Then why warn me?"
Noah looked ashamed.
"Because three weeks ago, Ethan got drunk and said the Bennett wedding would be the biggest deal he ever closed."
Claire's jaw clenched.
"A deal."
"I thought he was bragging about marrying rich."
Noah continued before she could interrupt.
"Then I saw the reception schedule on his laptop."
He had noticed the line about a private signing after dinner.
When he asked Ethan about it, Ethan said Claire would be giving him temporary voting authority because married couples should not keep business walls between them.
Noah had believed him until Grant appeared at the bachelor gathering earlier that night.
"Grant was there?"
"For ten minutes."
"Why?"
"He gave Ethan a flash drive."
Claire looked at Naomi.
"What was on it?"
"I don't know."
Noah leaned forward.
"But after Grant left, Ethan told Blake that by Monday, Vivian Bennett wouldn't be able to block anything anymore."
Claire felt the meaning settle over the room.
This was larger than wedding money.
It was about company control.
Naomi asked the question Claire had been avoiding.
"Why did you connect the video call?"
Noah took a long breath.
"Because I was a coward."
He had tried twice to warn Claire directly that evening.
Both times, Ethan had been nearby.
So Noah opened a group video call from Ethan's phone while Ethan was distracted.
He expected Claire to answer and hear enough to become suspicious.
"You could have sent me a message."
"Ethan started checking my phone after he thought I was asking too many questions."
"Why stay his best man?"
Noah gave a bitter laugh.
"Because leaving would have told him I knew something."
Claire studied him.
"And the safe?"
"I knew Blake had the laptop."
"Why didn't you bring it to me?"
"Because it isn't mine to take."
Naomi nodded slightly.
At least Noah understood that much.
Then Noah said something Claire did not expect.
"The money isn't the worst part."
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded paper.
It was a photocopy of an internal Bennett Hospitality memo.
The memo recommended removing Vivian as chair after a vote of no confidence.
Claire read the proposed replacement name.
Grant Holloway.
Beneath it was a list of expected votes.
Claire's name had been marked as controlled through proxy.
She looked up slowly.
"Where did you get this?"
"Ethan's printer tray."
Claire placed the memo into the black folder.
Noah stood to leave.
At the door, he stopped.
"Claire, there is one more thing."
She waited.
"Ethan thinks the prenuptial agreement protects him."
"From what?"
May you like
Noah's face went pale.
"From you finding out about the other woman."
