Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Wasn't the Betrayal.

Claire expected the words to hurt.
Instead, she felt strangely calm.
Maybe there was only so much betrayal a person could absorb in one night before shock became clarity.
"Who is she?"
Noah shook his head.
"I don't know if there is an affair."
Claire's expression hardened.
"You just said there was another woman."
"There is a woman, but I don't know what she is to him."
Noah explained that Ethan had been meeting someone named Sabrina Vale at a coffee shop near Bennett Hospitality headquarters.
He had seen them together three times.
Each meeting happened shortly after a board meeting.
Naomi recognized the name immediately.
"Sabrina Vale used to work in corporate compliance."
Vivian, who had joined the meeting, looked stunned.
"We fired her last year."
"Why?" Claire asked.
Her mother hesitated.
"Grant said she falsified an internal report."
The room fell quiet.
Claire reached for her phone.
It took Naomi less than five minutes to locate an old number for Sabrina.
They expected voicemail.
Sabrina answered.
"Who is this?"
Claire introduced herself.
There was a long silence.
Then Sabrina said, "I wondered when you'd call."
Claire put the phone on speaker.
Sabrina denied having a romantic relationship with Ethan.
She said Ethan had contacted her six months earlier because he wanted information about why she left Bennett Hospitality.
"He acted like he was trying to help you," Sabrina said.
"Then I realized he was trying to find out how much I knew about Grant."
Claire looked at her uncle's name on the no-confidence memo.
"What do you know?"
Sabrina had discovered irregular consulting invoices routed through three outside firms.
One of those firms later became Mercer Strategic Hospitality.
When she raised questions, Grant accused her of altering records.
She was dismissed before she could complete the audit.
"Do you still have evidence?" Naomi asked.
"I have copies of my notes."
"Where?"
Sabrina hesitated.
"Not over the phone."
Claire arranged to meet her at a twenty-four-hour cafe across from the hotel.
Marcus objected to Claire leaving the building.
So Sabrina agreed to come to the Aurelia instead.
At 4:10 a.m., she entered through a private staff entrance.
She was in her early thirties, sharply dressed despite the hour, and visibly nervous.
Sabrina carried no dramatic box of evidence.
She brought a small notebook.
Inside were dates, invoice numbers, and account references.
Naomi compared them with the suspicious payment in Claire's folder.
The pattern matched.
Sabrina pointed to a series of initials beside several payments.
G.H.
Grant Holloway.
E.M.
Ethan Mercer.
Claire asked the question directly.
"Were they working together before Ethan proposed to me?"
Sabrina looked down.
"I believe so."
The answer struck harder than the possibility of an affair.
Claire and Ethan had been engaged for eleven months.
They had started dating two years earlier.
If Sabrina was right, Ethan's relationship with Grant might have begun before the proposal.
Possibly before Ethan had ever told Claire he loved her.
Sabrina turned another page.
One entry was circled in red.
It showed a meeting between Grant and Ethan at a private club eighteen months earlier.
Claire and Ethan had met for the first time seventeen months earlier.
She stared at the date.
"He knew who I was before we met."
Sabrina did not answer.
She did not need to.
Claire closed the notebook.
The wedding had stopped being a broken romance.
It was now the final move in a plan that had begun before the romance existed.
Then Sabrina looked toward the black folder.
"If you have the proxy page, check the footer code."
Naomi pulled it out.
At the bottom was a six-digit internal document number.
Sabrina read it and went still.
"That template didn't come from Ethan."
Claire's voice dropped.
"Whose was it?"
Sabrina looked at Vivian.
May you like
"Your husband's."
Claire's father had been dead for four years.
